    Hi,

I am looking into getting a USB Digital Camera for hopefully around the 400 Euro range. I looked at the market before Xmas but I never got around to getting one. At the time I was investigating the Sony Cyber-Shot camera range from Sony.

Anyone have any recommendations on a good digital camera at the 400 Euro mark? :D

i think size is the 1st issue you should tackle.

tiny [very portable] - eg pentax optio s4
medium [portable] - eg sony p72
large [big zoom] - eg kodak dx6490

    Thanks Dave,

I think size is a moderately important point to me. I would accept a larger camera if it meant a better built in optical zoom etc once it doesn't compromise too heavily on cost. Small would be nice once it's properties aren't compromised by it's size restrictions...

I recently purchased the Casio Exilim EX-Z3. Nice and neat, 3.2 mega pix, 3 optical and a handy dock station. Only prob is that it comes with 10meg inbuilt... So I'm off now to buy an SD card! I also purchased a case, set me back €40. I 've it 3 days now and I'm delighted with it!

I must recommend the Pentax Optio 555. It does great in all the reviews. It got 97% in one I read a while ago. It's 5MP and 5XOpticalZoom which is Great in a very compact camera. I could post a few photos I've taken if you guys want. It can take macro shots at 2cm!
I got mine at Pixmania. I wouldn't recommend them, Amazon had a big delay at the time. They send it with French plugs and manual. Not much cheaper than Amazon either. It cost around €560 but the Optio 550 is still around - the one it replaced. The only real difference is the speed it operates at (startup etc.)

Let me know if ye want a few sample shots.

I have that and I can say its really a good camera. A lot of features especially for novices.

You'll get the Canon A80, if you look around and buy online, for that kind of money. Like the A70 but with a 4 megapixel CCD. 342 euros at Amazon (may be a few quid more as they probably charge 21% VAT rather than 17.5)

The IXUS 430 is in the same price bracket. It loses some of the manual modes of the A80 but it's a nice bit smaller.

Canon Powershot A80 @ Amazon (Review)

Canon Ixus 430 @ Amazon (Review) (it's called the Powershot S410 in the US)

Canon Powershot A70 @ Amazon (as mentioned above) (Review)

I'm looking at the above myself. I'm still counting myb pennies and they don't add up to a purchase yet but I'm looking at the A80 or the Ixus. The A80 is bigger (but not too big) but has quite a lot of manual modes that I may or may not use (I quite fancy using the B setting to turn full streets into some 28 Days later style post apocalyptic setting). The Ixus is tiny - it'll fit in a weeny shirt pocket (no-one would ever be safe again). Just as well I don't have the money yet because I can't really decide.

The above reviews may be helpful - each review has about 8 pages with everything you might need to know. Plenty of other comprehensive reviews at the main reviews page on the site as well. Good useful site that.

the canon a80 is a very nice camera, if a little difficult to get the exposure right on the manual modes.
the fuji f420 is very nice compact camera that comes in around the €350-400 mark. it does not have the range of features that the a80 has but is a fair bit cheaper and very compact plus its got a very large 1.8inch lcd screen that is far better than the a80's

DON'T BUY A DIGITAL CAMERA WITHOUT CHECKING THIS CAMERA OUT!!!
    It is seriously that good!
