What would you do for a fag?

Funny story in the papers today about a guy in Canada who was sentenced to jail for 20 months for aggravated assault and asked the judge to increase his sentence by 4 months so he could go to a prison where he was allowed smoke. Any prison term less than 24 months is served in a provincial jail where smoking is forbidden. The judge granted his request so they guy will be going to a state prison instead.

So my question to all the smokers is would you have done the same. I can't imagine myself opting for loss of freedom over loss of cigarettes. I'd rather do the 20 months and focus on the first cigarette and freedom again :-)

Anyone got any stories of things you did when you're desperate for a fag? I have to admit to the odd raid of ashtrays if I've run out and can't get to a shop. gross yes, but when you're addicted.....

Remember kids, always say NO to a cigarette!

Take the 20 months. That way you will have quite or it would help you quit anyway.

Iwould rather do the full term and be able to smoke, it would be pure torture
for a smoker to do time and to also stop an addiction.
Ireckon the few extra months would be well worth the pain of a no smoking prison.

no way would i take the stay in the smoking prison. 4 extra months

in the non smoking prison the chances of giving up are quite high i'd imagine so a win win all around

    I don't smoke, so there's nothing I'd do for a smoke

But off topic [kinda] for a moment, does anybody else see that the judge had a perfect opportunity to really punish this criminal by sentencing him to the 20 months, thus preventing him from smoking. The criminal probably realises that he won't serve the full 24 months anyway, so might as well ask for it, be able to smoke & get out early anyway!

Isn't this going to cost the tax payer a **** load more? 4 months extra prison time, paid by the tax payer, because a criminal wants to be able to smoke?

    That Judge should be disciplined...

There's absolutely nothing worse than to be dying for a fag. Well maybe for heroin users it's worse, i wouldn't know. When i am dying for a fag, i would kill for one. Especially if i'm stuck in a place where i can't smoke.

You got that right. I'm the same - it's maddening but great at the same time when you manage to escape the no smoking hell and can light up and take in the wonderful smoke. Love it.

After reading through this thread, I have to say,
    I love being a non-smoker.

Or he could have been a serious b*stard and gave him only 3 months extra, but maybe theres rules against that sorta thing :)

I gave up in Janurary and now i'm suffering. This weekend in the pub watching the matches was cruel. I'm holding out but its hard for a non-smoker to realise what its like. I'm also off the beer for lent which is a way easier even though i really like my pints. Its like an addiction!!!!
