Finally everything arrived. My first p.c build and it took me about 6 hours but it worked on the first boot so not too shabby.

    Specs are :

    Abit ic7-max 3
    P4(c) 3.2ghz
    2 x 512 Geil pc500 ultra platinum ddr ram
    sapphire radeon 9800XT 256mb
    Thermaltake lanfire case
    Thermaltake 480watt butterfly p.s.u.
    2 x 120gb samsung HD's for RAID 0
    Audigy 2ls soundcard
    Thermalright p-94 heatsink
    DVD writer.
    Sony Trinitron P1100 21" crt.(Can do 1600x1200 @100hrz)

Installing windows at the mo. Once I get the latest drivers and update everything I will post some benchmarks and screenshots. This baby is gonna be overclocked. Gonna try and reach 4ghz.

Cheers for everyones help and advice.

That is one hell of a superb mother****er of a rig :D

Let us know how you are getting on tweaking and OC'ing it m8. Would be very interested to see max FSB results and all the settings you have used

Your aim should be a good bit higher than that m8. Target should be 4.8GHz on air - be delighted if you reach that. As long as you've tried everything, contend yourself with the final result. Below 4GHz is unlikely though :)

Why did you skimp on the parts? :D

Serious machine you got there, hope it all goes well, id say 4Ghz will be no problem, 4.4 should be about as high as id go, 4.8 would be very doubtful (on air)

But dont let that stop you!

You mean you're willing to pay €60 just to have a look at it in all it's overclocked state ;)

Cheers lads it is sweet but it's really pissing me off at the moment.

Looking forward to running benchmarks and overclocking but I can't get the RAID to work as you can see in the other post.

    GAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Wtf?? there's no way on earth he'll get anywhere near 4Ghz on air.
~3.5Ghz stable is about average for a P4 3.2c, 3.7Ghz is good. I'm quite happy with 3.95Ghz from my 3.4c.

    4.8Ghz on air?

Well from early overclocks so far I have it up to 3.7 stable without touching the voltages. I reckon I can get closs to 4.0 if I up the voltages slightly.

Not a fear of getting much higher than that with air.

slightly off topic, but how long could you keep it clocked like that? indefinetly?
    /obviously i have little idea of o'clocking.

yeah he could keep it clocked like that for ever and ever if its stable.

nice rig bloodbath will be interested in your benchmarks and i say you can get 4.0Ghz alright you got a nice heat sink, hows your temps?

18083 3Dmk01 is about right for your rig, 3DMk03 should be around 6440.
Did you run any Sandra benchies?

Ok turned off Hyper Threading and got 18160. Overclocked the c.p.u to 3.6ghz(225mhzx16) without changing the core voltage and got 19556.

In 2003 I got 6563. That was with HT turned on. I have to run it again with it turned off and then again with it overclocked to 3.6.

Ran SiSoft Sandra but I didn't document the scores. Just been busy with college this week. I will do a full set of benchmarks at stock speeds and overclocked speeds this weekend.

Ok to achieve a higher overclock I'm going to have to up the voltage. Can anyone tell me safe levels for core voltages for c.p.u and RAM. I should be able to get to 4ghz with a higher voltage.

Just having a slight problem at the moment. On startup my RAM is identified as 400mhz.(200x2) It is in fact 500mhz. Now I don't know if this is just an error as my memory scores are very high or whether it is running at 400mhz.

I can't change the memory in my bios only through the fsb. Maybe I should update the bios and up it to 500mhz. My overclock to 3.6 meant the RAM was running at either 450mhz or 550mhz. This RAM overclocks well but 550 would be the very top limit. It's GEIL pc4000 platinum RAM. Any ideas?

Other than that I'm happy with the performance. It's running perfectly now.

I'm keeping it running at stock speeds. Theres no need to overclock yet. I can run any game with full detail @1600x1200@100hz and the frame rates are still excellent.

Found X2's game benchmark with full detail really pushed it but the frame rates were still respectable.

Also I have my RAID set up to transfer information in 64k/b blocks. It allows anything from 8k/b to 128k/b. Does anyone know which is the fastest?

Lastly I want to overclock the graphics card by about 10-20%. It's a Sapphire 9800XT. Appartantly a 10-20% overclock is no problem I just need a program to do it. Tried Powerstrip but it was reading my core as 59mhz and my RAM as 59mhz. It's not reading it correctly at all. Can anyone recomend another program for this?

    Cheers

    4.8GHz? are you serious? that's 50%.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

hi blood bath you could try the omega drivers for your XT they allow you to overclock through the control panel either that or get rage3d i think its called.

with regards to the ram i'd say the reason that is boots at 200mhz is because its set to run at 1:1 and your processor is 200mhz at stock.

i don't think i can change the memory frequency in the bios either just the divider but with your ram no matter what your overclock really you should be able to do 1:1 i'm not sure if you have dividers that let you put the ram frequency higher then the motherboard or if there is an benefit from doing that.

    people usually recommend 1:1.

safe voltage levels is something i've been interested in also. with regards to the ram you ram is rated at 275mhz or whatever at a certain voltage so check that out with the manufacturer and find what voltage you can use with out invalidating the warranty you shouldn't really have to increase your ram voltage though if your overclocks are going to be a good bit less then the frequency it is capable of.

with regards to the cpu voltages i'm not sure about p4's people usually just say keep an eye on your temps i personally like to keep below 50c. so if a voltage does that i consider it ok

Well, that's aiming high alright, might need more than aircooling for that :)

Have seen reports of that mobo running over 300FSB with excellent memory and air cooling, but maybe with slightly lower P4

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,761 ✭✭✭Col_Loki

Wow thats some system alright !!

If you dont intend on overclocking the CPU (ie leaving the FSB at 200mhz) then you should try using the 4:5 FSB:RAM divider, this should run your ram at its designed 500mhz. Due to the P4 having a higher FSB than the AMD's it should see memory bandwidth gains (where the AMD's see 0 gain).

He's got top end air cooling so a big overclock would be expected . Should be approaching 4ghz IMO, but will require Vcore increase , monitoring temps, and testing with Prime95 to insure stability. He's got the Ram & Motherboard to hit high FSB..... only limiting factor is the CPU.

No using the 5:4 divider lowers the Ram speed even more. It's handy for doing an overclock on the processor but I think i'm going to have to update the bios. The divider is a c.p.u/ram divider.

I have the graphics card overclcok sorted. Got a disk with the card to overclock. Didn't even see it. Did a 10% overclock already and it's fine. 20% should be no problem either especially as I have a fan pci card blowing straight up at it.

The core on the graphics is 370 I think and the Ram is only 368 as far as I remember. Is this not massively underclcoked? I was under the impression that it was ddr2 on those cards and that they would reach 500mhz memory or higher.

    Cheers for the help

The 4:5 divider is only available with 400/533Mhz cpus.

The 9800XT runs at 412/365 stock and the 9800 Pro is 380/340 stock, so your gpu is way underclocked.

What are you using to read the gpu/ram speeds?

The software I got with the card. ATI's own stuff. Can't remember the name of it.

I ended up uninstalling it because it kept ****ing around with my gamma for some reason and everytime I opened a game a gay electronic voice would say "Game Detected". Twats.

Quite like mine, I've got the 3Ghz, and about 420 Gb HD space. and I also have 2 19 inch monitors.

Hope it goes well for you

Try using Rage3D to tweak/check speeds:

    Cheers lump.

I downloaded that sir Random. Will install it when I get home. Don't have the net at home yet but it's ordered. The 16gig package from esat.

Can't wait to kick some ass online.

No no been posting from the college during the day and from the net cafe at night.

I built it here in the cafe too in case I needed some online help, which I did. Got there in the end. Now i'm raping the cafes connection to download stuff for it.

Just can't seem to get what I want quick enough. Having a Lan in 3 weeks time though with about 10 or 15 of us going so there's gonna be pleanty to leach. Yup.
