hi i'm trying to use bit torrent but i get very low download rates as apparently i'm behind some sort of firewall, i don't have the xp firewall turned on but apparently the ports i need open failed the test which indicates they are closed.

i'm using eircom's netopia modem via my ethernet port

i tried installing my nortan firewall and opening the ports i was interested in but to no avail anyone know how to sort this out.

i know pretty much nothing about firewalls and stuff

    cheers

I haven't seen the netopia modem, but maybe you can connect to it and configure things? If so there's probably a firewall built into it, which you need to open the ports on.

ok any idea how i'd go about that?

Someone who actually has one would probably be more helpful, but at a guess you open your browser and point it at http://192.168.1.1

User/pass is probably admin/password or admin/1234. If you have an faq from eircom, or a manual for the modem they should mention it.

Now now data you wouldent be plaing to download new scrubs and enterprise would you ? - ofcoarse not!

I am not behind a firewall but i have used bit torrent behind a firewall and dont remember any problems.

You DL speed depends on allot. I remember 1 night about 2 weeks ago my file was at 0% and downloading at about 1 kb/s and in the morning about 4% had downloaded. The next nite i left the same file running - it got 20% that night

Im assuming that low speeds means a 56ker is uploading to u and high speed means cable modem and above.

nah there is defintely something up with my ports, with the shadow experimental bittorrent, my status light is yellow while bizmarks' was green for the same torrent so i have a problem

also we tested the relevant ports required and they where closed.

surely someone on eircom bb may have come across this problem?

    cheers

I had the same thing when I got broadband first... you have to make sure ports 6881 to 6999 are open (only TCP I think), and forward any packets that come in through there to your computer. Should be plain sailing after that.

thanks jazz but i'm not sure hot to do that, its sorted on the firewall but not on the modem help apreciated

Well according to eircom's broadband support pages you can access the Netopia's configuration page at http://192.168.1.254. If you get that far then we should be able to tell you what to do (some screenshots would help alot!).

how did u check if the ports were open or closed Data, just wondering Id like to make sure my are open also.

With regards to Bit Torrent its an odd aul thing..

2 Night ago I dloaded a 1.4gb File, started off very low like 15kb for a good good while then eventually got going at 40 - 45 kbs.

Now with my most recent dload, its been on 8 -10kbs and staying at that.

The same thing has happened me recently. I was always getting over 40KB/sec, and I don't remember having a yellow light on shadows client, but now I'm only getting 2 or 3KB/sec max on some torrents, and the yellow light is always on. :(

ok sorted folks, thanks for all your replies and especially to hudson with the very helpful pm

anyone thats interested heres how it can be done

    visit 192.168.1.254, your router homepage.

    Then click 'Expert mode' [OK]
    Configure
    Advanced
    Pinholes
    Add

    Fill in the boxes:
    Pinhole name: Bittorrent
    Protocol Select: TCP
    External port start: 6881
    External port finish: 6889

the internal ip address can be gotten by going to command prompt and typing ipconfig and take the first set of numbers

    cheers again

Nice one, glad you got it sorted. You might want to change the upper port number to 6999 though, the newer clients use these ports too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

thanks for the tip Jazz, currently getting downloads at 50kb/s yippee

Not allowed to post links to website sthat contain files that are being shared illigaly
http://www.bthq.tk its all bout bit torrent but it has no files

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,821 ✭✭✭Xcellor

A peer to peer program doesn't have to be just for downloading illegal stuff... So I really don't understand the problem with posting a link... But if it's policy on this board then OK :)

    it says here to...
    visit 192.168.1.254, your router homepage.

    Then click 'Expert mode' [OK]
    Configure
    Advanced
    Pinholes
    Add

Internal IP address [Whatever your PC ip address is]
    Internal port: 6881

the internal ip address can be gotten by going to command prompt and typing ipconfig and take the first set of numbers

and i read another msg that the upper port number should be change to 6999 coz the newer clients..which upper port??..the external port start or finish?...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,481 ✭✭✭satchmo

The external port finish, since (afaik) every connection in bittorrent uses a different port, so you can only have as many connections as you have ports open.

This has probably been covered already but :

If you have a 512k:128k link set your max upload speed at about 8kbps.
This is about 80% of your max upload speed. The BT client needs to send acknowledgements that it has correctly received data. If you're uploading more than 80% the acks get lost so your client has to throttle back on the downloads. Setting it higher than 80% will kill your download speed!

I use Shadows experimental client and I use the isdn preset (8k max with 3 concurrent uploads)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 879 ✭✭✭sirpsycho

I'm using the netopia modem with 512/128 but how do i setup the max upload speed to 8kbps???

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

you need the torrent client that proteus mentioned about google shadow experimental client

you would have to use a client that allows you to set it
Shadows experimental is one client that does

I got that client but I'm still getting brutal downloading rates of 2k-5k. I've changed the port settings on the modem too but no joy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

you getting the green light on the torrents?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 879 ✭✭✭sirpsycho

yellow. not good eh? what should i do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 879 ✭✭✭sirpsycho

Changed the Internal port: to 6881, had it set at 6999. light is green now but still downloading at a miserable 5k. is it always like this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

suppose it depends on the torrent now and how many peers and seeds you are connected to.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

    Norton? Norton firewall or antivirus?

I have my router port forwarding 6881 - 6999 inbound & outbound and also port 6969 outbound and I am still getting a yellow light. Thing is I've just reinstall windows. Before I didnt had to do anything with my router and I was geting the green light. Dont know what have changed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,560 ✭✭✭Woden

i uninstalled norton firewall just to make sure it wasn't causing the issues and set my router up using the settings above, i still wasn't getting the green light but then i realised i had turned on the windows xp firewall to stop me getting the blaster worm as soon as i got online, when i turned this off and then restarted i was getting the green light and good download rates again. i have norton antivirus on now and its fine

    I'm also getting yellow light.
Im on XP home , and have a D-Link DI - 604 Ethernet Broadband Router.
    I went to my router homepage but couldn't find ;
    "Pinhole name: Bittorrent
    Protocol Select: TCP
    External port start: 6881
    External port finish: 6889
Internal IP address [Whatever your PC ip address is]
    Internal port: 6881"
    anywhere.

    Closest I found was :
This it? If so what do I put where?

    Name
    Trigger Port -
    Trigger Type TCP/UDP/Both
    Public Ports
    Public Type TCP/UDP/Both

    Any help appreciated.

    Cheers

other wise its a matter off going into your router and putting in a pin hole similar to the eircom one i presume

if you've opened the required ports (inbound and outbound!) the only thing that could cause problems is a software firewall, such as XP's built in one.

If you still can't get the thing downloading properly, try the following: Remove the external firewall (if possible) and just run off the software firewall. Then reenable the external, and disable the software.

If that still doesn't work, make sure you have all the latest service packs and windows patches, and then disable both firewalls, and see if it still works.

If THAT doesn't work, go into the Bittorrent client config, and change the ports that Bittorrent uses, it's possible your ISP is port blocking those specific ones.

I dont know how to open ports on my router homepage :E
XP firewall is turned off etc.

RTFM then. That tells you everything.

Read the manual for your Bittorrent client, and write down what ports it needs (e.g. 6991-6999 in UDP - incoming and outgoing; 6123 in TCP outgoing only). Then read the manual for your router (if you don't have it, get it off the manufacturers website). Then open the ports.

BTW: I made those ports up, they may be right, but more than likely they're wrong.
