How are the campaigns going in your college?

This is how it's going in DCU,

'The Elections for the SU Executive '04 have officially been cancelled. According
to article 16.8 of the Students' Union Constitution the nominations for
candidates should close at least 10 academic days before the polling days.
The original dates set only provided for 9 days between close of nominations
    and polling.

The elections have now been rescheduled and polling will now open on the
    30th & 31st March.'

    Oh deary me.

We've had similar problems in years gone by in NUI,G where people made errors counting days, the entire student body was technically ineligible to vote and a few others.

This years elections are on Thursday and it all seems to be going smoothly this year.

Unfortunately this will always happen from time to time.

The SU Officers will just be a group of sabat's and non-sabat's from the general student body not constitutional lawyers. Muck up's like this happen even if you have more lawyers than C Montgomery Burns. A small group passing only necessary items to an external solicitor is bound to make some mistakes.

well in fairness the dcu su constitution isn't the most difficult to read. You;d then think that between the su exec, union council and then electorial committee, that someone would at least have a quick glance over the constitution to make sure everything was cool.. especially the electorial committee, as correct me if i'm wrong, but they are there to ensure the elections run smootly and constitutionally...

wonder why they didn't mention anything about accepting nominations after the nominations had closed in their email (!! :p )...?

[edit] The complete list of failures...

    * closing dates of the nominations mis-advertised: twice
    * failed to give the required 10 days between close of nominations and opening of the polls
    * no notice of nominations for post-grad rep
    * accepted nominations over the phone
    * accepted nominations after the deadline
    * allowed nominations to be changed after the deadline
    * refused to respond when their mistake was pointed out
    * Called an unconstitutional EGM
    * Failed to own up to the whole mess which led to the cancellation of the elections...
