The Mysterious Cities of Gold. Jeez, There's a blast from the past.

I'm not gonna lie to you, that cartoon confused me as a kid.

What can i say? I was a slow child! Somethings never change. :D

I kept missing episodes here and there and as a result, combined with TCCs policy of showing random repeats constantly, I hadn't a frikking clue what was going on in that program. I still loved it though. That, MASK, and Transformers. Class! :)

MASK, yeah forgot that one. It's repeated on Fox Kids, or some channel on Sky Digital now, caught an episode recently. Animation was a lot worse than I remember, but then we were prob so forgiving as kids hehe

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 147 ✭✭JippoKelly

I only remember watching it. I can't actually remember anything about MASK. Although i have this image of a petrol station that was a base or something in it. Maybe I'm gone crazy but has that got anything to do with MASK?

If you liked Thundercats, check this out!

    Oh Yeah...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

Boulder Mountain was the Mask HQ, a petrol station yeah. It could convert into an armoured base also.

Heard that Thundercats thing before as an mp3 file, never seen a movie hehe :D

Ren and Stimpy (the first series) was simply the best cartoon ever....

I was a big cities of gold fan when I was younger... never saw the last episode though because the BBC didn't bother showing it....

There is one cartoon that used to be on The Childrens Chanel that I can barely remember... it was about a guy called Blue who rode around on a robot called Surf...

Please see attached a crude drawing of the image I have stuck in my head...

I've already tried the Big Cartoon Database with no luck...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,892 ✭✭✭bizmark

    Mask
    Battletech
    Earthworm jim
    city of gold
    He-man
    Transformers

some show where a native american ranger could use the powers of a bear etc in the future........."Strength of a bear bear bear" Damned if i can remember the name of it though

some other show where a young boy had a alien freind that lived in his watch ...it was a pink head.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

The native american cowboy was Bravestarr.. I always loved the 'just say no to drugs' message episode where all Tex Hex was getting kids hooked on a dangerous drug called Spin.

And I think the stuff they drank in the bars was this pink liquid in shot glasses called sweet water....

And I the other cartoon you're talking about is Widget the World Watcher, which was probably about the best of the 'protect the enviroment' cartoons... far better than Captain Planet and the Smoggies anyway...

Robotech was great too.. I just got all the early episodes on DVD and it's still really good... I think most of the love triangle plot line was lost on me as a kid... so I had something new to appriciate..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,419 ✭✭✭nadir

TCamen is onto some good stuff there.
    Id have to go for

and a couple of other I can remember, there was a really cool, manga type one that used to be on channel 4 early on saturday I think, like in the late 80's maybe eaerly 90's but I cant remember the name, damn what was that called. hrm

There used to be a cool cartoon set inside the body with all the blood cells as little people and germs were the bad guys? There was a mag to go with it aswell I think. Does anyone remember that?
Apart from that, most of my faourites have already been mentioned- Cities of Gold, Dogtanion and the Muskahounds :D (loved his cranky horse, was Ginger it's name? Can't remember), Captain Planet, Flash Gordon... ahhh the memories!!

Dogtanion's horse was called Sandy, if my memory serves me correctly... I like the way Dogtanion's nose would flash red when he got mad..

The cartoon inside the human body was called Once Upon a Time... Life.

It was part of a series, my favourite was Once Upon a Time... Space, as it had the really cool robot in it.

I think there was one that dealt with the history of the world as well

They all had the same characters in them... you know like the guy whose beard covered his whole body...

If you want something to test your memory of old cartoons to have a look at this:

    KIDS TV Challenge

The only problem with it is that you have to get the spelling just right... or just wrong in the case of Spider-man... they want the answer without the hyphen... oh the humanity....

There was an episode of Once upon a time... life with a kid who listened to his walkman too loud, and it showed all the permanent damage that was happening to his ears from inside his body...

I learned a valuable lesson from that episode and it sticks with me to this day...

and also if your walkman is too loud, you can't hear your phone ringing and you look like a total spaz on the bus...

    James Bond Junior.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,216 ✭✭✭✭monkeyfudge

I managed to get all 100 in the end... but it took over a week. Let me know if there are any that are driving you particularly nuts!

I hated James Bond Junior, and it was always the most popular show on the Den and was shown every day, while the Dens best cartoon, Batman, was left to languish in a wandering time slot.

In the film Casino Royale, James Bond's nephew was played by Woody Allen, it would have been a much better cartoon if they'd based the character on him... bleh...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,807 ✭✭✭Badly Drunk Boy

Shure , aren't yiz all only kids!! :p I remember the first episode of 'Itchy And Scratchy'...eh...I mean 'Tom And Jerry' and it was grand....

Actually, I liked Battle Of The Planets, Bod, and these Czech thingies that RTE used to play to fill in time slots (To anyone too young to witness them, the Simpsons sorta satirised them in the episode where 'Itchy And Scratchy' were taken from Krusty's show after he went bankrupt, I think.)

There was a blond surf dude in James Bond junior, he really wrecked my head and I hated his pink shorts!! Why did they never change their clothes?? :p

ditto. apart from Dogtanian which I grew to loath with a passion.

Ulysess31 rocked but to me Optimus Prime is still the daddy.

Was that Visonaries or something like that? They had HUGE holographic shields that would morph out creatures at their command or something like that....

I could be wrong though, but I can see the cartoon you're talking about in my head

For my own view I used to watch (in no particular order)
    Once upon a time... life
    He-man
    Jayce and the wheeled warriors
    captain planet
    telebugs
muppet babies (can hear the theme tune in my head now - muppet, muppet, muppet, bay bay bayyyyyyyyyybies!!!)
    Wacky races
    Penelope Pitstop
    Catch the Pigeon
    captain caveman
the new adventures of scooby doo
    and nowadays - the simpsons

    Ah the memories

No... the native american cowboy was definitely Bravestarr, he had all the powers of the animals in the Totem Pole... Strength of the bear, sight of the eagle, speed of the something or other... and so on...

Visionaries didn't last very long if I remember correctly... I think I had one of the action figures and a vehicle.. It was back when holograms were still thought of being very expensive...

Anyone remember Dino Riders? The good guys used telepathy to control dinosaurs, while the bad guys used technolgy and brain implants on the poor dinos... and in the toys the dinos were all motorised and the action figures were exactly the same size as the Mask action figures, so you could stick them in Mask vehicles too...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,255 ✭✭✭TCamen

Seems all the cartoon threads are crossing over with stuff, cool to see so many people talking about the greats :D

Dino-Riders was cool cartoon, the toys were the best!! We used to scare our dog with the motorised T-Rex, it was hilarious :p

    Dino Riders

For themes, Sound America is quite good, although their labelling systems isn't the best. So weird to hear some of the opening themes after so long!

    Sound America Cartoon Themes

Visionaries were so cool, especially the toys, used to have a load of the figures, wish I'd kept them now mad: " Visionaries, knights of the magical light, Visionaries, with magical powers they fight" ah the memories. Don't think there was too many episodes.

Centurions had some damn cool figures too.
Anyone remember the old Castle Greyskull & Snake Mountain He-Man playsets, where you distort your voice talking through the Snake microphone, that was cool
Or the Thundercats lair set, with the light sensor thing going on? If you moved the light to point at an enemy vehicle you got with the set, it would explode, or make noise or something. They don't make toys like they used to!
Back to actual cartoons...anyone remember Galaxy High or Jem (truly truly outrageous) ?

I noticed The Den has 'The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo' on some day, must check it out, really enjoyed that series back in the day!

EDIT: Got that quiz after I posted, managed 65 first go, but spelling is cheating me outta a few more. I'll try some more tomorrow...whacky races, dasterdly and mutt...stop being so picky!!

Speed of the Puma ! Used to watch it every morning before heading off to school in the mornings many moons ago, I can remember the main bit of the theme tune in my head !

whacky races, dasterdly and mutt...stop being so picky!!

It's looking for dastardly and muttley... Charlie Brown and Friends was the last one I got... just couldn't figure out what the blasted thing wanted from me...

Oh, and in all fairness the New Castle Greyskull is really good... My nephew got it for Christmas and I speant all christmas day playing with it.. it has such cool sound effects... the best being that sound the laser blasts make on the show...

I'm not so sure about the new He-man cartoon... Skeletor comes across as being alot more powerful, which is a good thing.. but Teela is no where near as attractive...

    Fairly odd Parents

    *I'm still growing*

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,746 ✭✭✭pork99

My favourites were the Pink Panther cartoons, Road Runner, Sylvester & Tweety Pie, Speedy Gonzalez, Bugs Bunny and that one about the skunk trying to get off with the cat(!?).

Also Top Cat which apparently was a cartoon adaptation of Sgt. Bilko!

(this is going back to the 70s now - by the 80s I was a would-be cool hard teenager with no interest in such childishness :) )

I can vaguely remember a cartoon series called "Wait till your father gets home" which bore an uncanny similarity in it's basic premise to "the Simpsons" and "Family Guy"

I looked up "Wait till your father gets home" on the web and all I can say is animation has come a long way since then

Though there is some validity in thinking that most popular culture is aimed at people under 30 because they don't remember it the first time around :)
