Sorry to bother ye, but what would be the minimum spec machine for running Mandrake 9.2? Am hoping to run it on a p2 with 512 megs or ram, will this work?

Have searched through threads but couldn't find anything similar, apologies if i missed out though and this is a repeat question

Yes it will work, depends on your hardware really

Yeah, should be fine, with one of the leaner window managers. Got any other specs for the machine in question?

    will run fine...

With 512Mb of RAM it should run reasonably well with any Window Manager. Turn off some of the eye candy if you use KDE and Gnome and there'll be very little difference in speed. Obviously a slimmer Window Manager will be faster.

I was running Knoppix (off the CD not a HDD Install) with KDE3 off a P2 with 112 Megs of RAM over Christmas. The only real problems I experienced with it were down to the abject lack of RAM (or swap).

its good to know that it will run,

The full specs of the machine are

    P2 350mhz
    512mb PC100 ram
    8mb ati rage graphics card,
13gb hdd (9gb for win2k and 4 allocated for linux), currently have an old red hat distro on it but messed up after 2 days that so want to replace it with something newer, with better hardware recognition

thanks for the help, any other advice will be much appreciated too

Mandrake 9.2 was on the March Issue (213) of PC PLUS DVD edition still available in Easons. Supplied as 3 ISO images so easy to burn to CD.

You could also consider the Linux Bible by Christopher Negus which comes with Fedora and Enterprise Edition. The book is excellent 1065 Pages !!) with lots of useful stuff if you're a beginner like me, €48 in Easons.

I'm sure they'll have the specs somewhere on www.mandrakelinux.com

managed to download, and burn the iso images for Mandrake the other night, first one was fine but the 2nd and third images were too big for my cds 750mb, was concerned but they burned anyway so i said i'd give the install a go, was amazed at how easy it was compared to the last (old) version of redhat i installed, 2nd and 3rd cd's didn't work (or weren't the right ones) during install but it still installed fine.

Anyway, long story short am really looking forward to messing around with this, and am grateful for the help ye gave me in answering my annoying questions, i'm sure i'll have many more

    Thanks again,

Now that you have linux installed, you'll be able to burn
    copies of those CDs.
    cdrecord driveropts=burnfree -v dev=01,00,00 -overburn -eject -data MandrakeCD2.iso

You'll replace my 01,00,00 with the device location of your burner - you can find it using cdrecord -scanbus

These fit on an 80min CD.

    Enjoy,
    NiallB

sorry to display my ignorance but how would i implement these commands
    cdrecord driveropts=burnfree -v dev=01,00,00 -overburn -eject -data MandrakeCD2.iso
are they linux commands, (confused by absense of /'s),

Anyway i have no internet connection with my linux machine so can't download and burn the ISOs there, still i should be able to burn them using 80min cds on a windows machine, right?

I've used nero on windows to burn mandrake CDs and once you use 80Min CDs you'll be grand.
