Just wondering if anyone read about the German au-pair who tragically died in Carrigaline, Cork last thursday while saving the 14-month old child she was caring for.

The Independent gave it a full page coverage nearly yesterday. It touched my heart like nothing else.

    ...heros do exist

read about it several times now. I'm from Carrigaline myself and that day the first I heard of it was something along the lines of "truck mounts kerb, several injured". Freaked out? Yes, quite a bit really...

Very nasty accident though. As I was passing the scene last Friday I took a look over to the kerb and the mountain of flowers is a truly sobering sight.

The flowers for those involved in the Bus crash in Dublin last week still line the pavement there too. Harrowing sights really - to think what happened at them.

very sad - she was a true heroine who put her own life before someone elses

once again it shows how trucks/lorries destroy lives and families

Apparently the truck driver didn't even realise that he had hit someone until he was flagged down. after that, he was banging his head off the ground.

The poor girl. It really wasa tragic event

I have the misfortune to know the truck driver and the girl who was killed. In both cases it's a shame it had to happen to such a nice person. Tragedy

What exactly happened? I'm sorry, but I couldn't find it on the web, and we got the tribune today which it doesn't seem to be in either.

a German girl (20) who was working as an au-pair in Carrigaline was crushed by a delivery truck trying to save the life of the little girl she was minding. The baby, although trapped underneath the truck for a few minutes, was pulled out by two men and was completely unharmed. It would seem that the babies buggy became caught on some part of the truck and the German girl got pulled underneath it while she was trying to save the girl. She was killed instantly apparently.

It was initially reported as "A truck has mounted a kerb in Carrigaline town and several people have been seriously injured".

God, that is terrible. The poor girl probably just wanted to visit Ireland to see what it was like. It's a very sad thing to happen

    Hey,

Wow, good response by people. I started this thread as a kind of small tribute to her. I didn't expect so much responses. Thanks all.
