my pots on my strat are knackered.they sound so scratcy and dirty its actually horrible. So im ordering 3 off the net, my question: is a volume pot different to a tone pot or if i just order 3 pots will i be fine? i know that 250K pots are used with single coils but what happens if i put in a 500K in case i wanna get a humbucker later on? im also ordering a switch, anyone know where i can get good wiring cause i think ill just rewire the whole thing!

jesus im dying with a hangover.....:(

Replace the pot with the same values you are using now, no point in buying 500kohm until you need them.

Or you could just try clean the ones you have already, open em up, and wipe away any residue and put the tiniest amount the ol' WD, i literally mean the tiniest drop, or it will get...gunky...later on.

Try TBX tone controls, they rock, although might be a bit expensive.

You can get shielded wiring in peats, although, I don't know how much of a difference it will make to noise levels (50hz hum).

Maybe you should invest in some shielding paint to coat the cavitys of the strat.

Sorry chaps, a mate has just come into some big money and is looking for a Les Paul. Found a Custom Shop LP Custom http://www.austinmusicinc.com/gearlist/guitar_picture.asp?guitar=500167

    really nice.

    Anyway, what Gilbet said. ;)

If you're going to put humbuckers in your strat, you're better off to set up a new scratch plate with new pickups, pots, wiring, etc - so if you ever want to make your strat a strat again you just put the other scratch plate back on.

Well, basically everything has already been said. A tone pot is the same as a volume usually. Some people prefere log pots for the volume pot because it's more natural to the ear but then some people think otherwise. Most guitar shops willl have replacements. I think Maplins might do them also. As for a switch, guitar shops should stock them also. As for the wiring, sheilded wire is overkill, especially if the control cavity is already sheilded with paint or copper tape. Simple multi strand wire should suffice.

    Hello,

250k pots give a warmer sound(therfore are ideally suited to thin sounding single coils, 500k pots are more suited to the frequency response of humbuckers, but that does`nt mean u cant use them also.

for what its worth fat strats(H-s-s) are wired in such a way that the humbucker does not have a tone control, the tone knobs only affect the singles. Therefore a 500k pot is used for the volume and the tones are left as 250k.

a great place to buy guitar parts online is www.stewmac.com .

    john.
