    What is it with this..
can anyone provide me with a SCIENTIFIC reason for this.
i mean, after you have the operation, you are a woman / man.

Does it take two years for the remnants of your previous sexuality to dissapear?
I dont agree with this "propagation" period

surely it should just be automatic, like the day after...
that way i might have a chance of winning something for ireland!!

Seeing as male athletes are generally better than their female counterparts, it would give men who become women an unfair advantage, because they are not normal natural women.

That aside, the term "Transvestite" refers to someone who dresses / acts like the opposite sex, not someone who has had a sex change, so this is either a very badly thought out post or a troll.

[edit] maybe its not a troll, but i still dont think transsexuals should be allowed compete in the olympics full stop. Women who used to be men are not the same as women who were born women[/edit]

    apologies for the feaux pas....
you know what i mean though..
i dont think its just fair to say men are better than women or vice versa...
my point being, transexuals should be allowed to compete automatically, or not at all..
i dont get this whole 2 year thing...
this is what the post was all about...

men and women should be on an equal footing in the olympics anyway

Especially good looking women, like Sonia O'Sullivan.

Let us say a woman wants to becoem a man. She gets testosterone treatment. She decides to not become a man after all. She has benefitted from testosterone treatment that in any other case would amount to doping.

I can vaguely recall an article from years ago* (I'm sure there's much better research since) that suggested that former men have a physical advantage over people who were born women. Which makes sense in my mind (if there's muscle mass built up, long treatments of oestrogen won't necessarily place them on an equal footing to women). Anyone have any recent links to sciency stuff?

*I do mean /years/ ago. Mid or early 90s. Probably early 90s, when I was running around and generally fit.

This is not a valid statement at all, all of the mens records are better than the womens. I think theres about a second or two in the difference for the 100m, which means women would finish miles behind, and the gap grows in proportion to the lenght of the race. Plus the obvious advantage the men have in strenght based sports. so surely a transexual will have an advantage/disadvantage (depending on whether they were a man or a woman to begin with)

I can see this descending into a political correctness love in :dunno:

I assume it has to do with the hormone treatments.

Someone on hormones is basically doping.

I'm guessing that the 2 year ban is to ensure that the hormone treatments don't give an unfair advanage.

ie, if I'm a male athelete who has had an operation a couple of weeks before the olympics start and have just started female hormon therapy. I may have no male sexual organs, but I still have a man's physique. I'm still full of male hormones and have a very unfair advantage.
