Do you need a phone line to install and operate the Sky+ digibox?

To actually operate it, no you do not need a phone line.

However I think that it may be needed for installation and they do insist that it is connected for the first 12 months as far as I know.

can you use a long cable to install and then just disconnect?

I had mine installed in November and it is not connected to a phone line.

Installer ran a temporary phone line to the Sky+ digibox just for the installation.

I got mine hooked up this afternoon. I'm in Madrid and just got someone at home to ring up by mobile and say that there weren't at home and could it be done over the air. I had the box sent out myself and obviously not a Sky install. The card was married to the new box with 10 minutes and by the time I had to go back to work the live pause was working at least. I'll check all the other features later and post back if there are any problems.

I rang SKY today pretending to be a UK customer thinking of upgrading to Sky+.

    I have a UK sub.

    I was told the following;

    1. The sky + box is not subsidised.

    2. If you want to marry your old card, you ring them but your box will have to call sky centre back.

    3. That software downloads are being sent via phone line when sky+ box calls back, guy said last dual recording one was done like that.

Is all this true? I thought the software updates were done over air via the satellite itself?

If it is, there's no point trying to marry my UK sub to a UK bought sky plus box?

Can you get the card married to the Sky+ box and get the Sky+ features activated without phone connection.

Was planning to up grade sub too from fam pack as only a few £ more than paying the additional £ 10 for the sky+ features.

Suppose i could always threaten to cancel my sub and so the operator loses an upgrade and a sub??

    Any advice /thoughts??

I think you got a muppet on the end of the line. If sky boxes were not subsidised then why would sky prevent UK distributors from selling into the republic.

Software downloads have never been sent down phonelines, its far too slow. Its not tecnically necessary for a call back for card re marrying but they would know when a box did not do so and could insist on it.

I'm afraid not its specifically for the minidish, if you have not bought the sky + already try asking the retailer to swop the LNB for you. As for the for the 40mm collar, the physical size of a lnb is of much less importance than the focus area so whoever told you that is mis informed I'm sorry to say, some people will say anything to sell a box.

an MTi quad would be suitable? I will ask for the swap. There is so much misinformation about, sky are always contradicting themselves.

Will wait for a while now as € has dipped to .66 cent against sterling.

why not buy it in Ireland? is there that much difference in price? dont forget to add shipping and bear in mind its much easier to get it swopped in Ireland than shipped back to Uk in the unlikely event of a warranty problem.

If they really wanted to check they could run the number through a product database but the guy on the activation phoneline will not have access to this anyway. Still if theres only a small difference in price might be worth sticking with a Uk source.

I dunno tony, whats in a sky plus box parts wise that costs €299? given that a decent dvd player is less than a €100 and its close to the price of a cheap dvd recorder now.
I bought mine off the shelf in London with no questions asked about what sub I was on, or my address or who I was or anything.
So no way of them getting a "subsidy" cost back for sure.
For all they cared I could have had a ftv card only.

    Everything seems to work fine.

However first impressions are that the tuner is a little less sensitive than the Pace 2600, all important for those of us in the fringe areas. Losing signal on the Astra 2D horizontal transponders about 45 mins earlier than before.

Welll of course they did not object as they are retail, subsidy is applied direct to manufacturer, retailer was still getting his margin. I can sell sky+ anywhere but I can only buy from a wholesaler designated by sky.

In any case it really does not matter to the end user as only a small percentage of buyers are not subscribers so I doubt sky really care.

Tony is right,I also bought mine in London,be careful about warranty.I had a problem with mine, the modem went. and I had a heck of a job with Finleys to replace the box, which they did eventually, but they knew it had'nt been bought in Ireland and I confessed that i bought it in Uk,since they wer'nt available here at the time. They wanted me to send it back to Uk sayingg it was'nt their problem.
