    Absolutely nothing.
I don't need to give up something because of some old religious tradition.

    Giving up fags...

Not because of the religious roots associated with Lent, but just because it's a good 'givey-uppey' time.

My kids will be off sweets and chocolate too, which is no harm!

His religion may be important to him. Or perhaps he watches too much TV and spends too much time on the net, a break from that sort of thing can be good for you once in awhile. Although, how long is lent? It might be a bit extreme.

You shouldnt be listening to other peoples conversations anyway, you fuggin stalker! ;)

I was going to give up listening to idiots prattling on about stuff they know nothing about for hours on end, but then I wouldn't be able to go to school.

I gave up beer last year for lent, and managed to do it too (even stayed off the drink for paddy's day too) but i wouldnt do that again. I like the odd beer every now and again helps me to relax and chill after a stressful day at work so i wont be doing that this year,

Instead of giving up something this year for lent im going to take an active interest more in religion. go to mass a bit more, pray a little bit more n stuff. i agree with most people here (even though im a practicing catholic) in that i dont see the reason why we have to give up something we like i know the reason behind lent but it seems old fashioned so im not going to give up anything this year that makes more sence to me.

Lent sucks for some people but not me! :D I cant see da point in giving up something unless it was something u regret doin each day. Like smokin! I dont smoke, alot of my frends seem 2 enjoy it, but deep down i dont think they do!

strictly speaking are you allowed eat chicken. i always argued with my mother about that when i was younger as im allergic to fish, and at the time was allergic to eggs so that didnt leave me with a whole lot of options.

What do you mean strictly speaking? Are there rules laid down. He's decided to give up something I think he can choose what he wants to eat.

I gave up meat one Lent, that was quite hard, but I managed to stick to it. I remember the first time I tasted meat again after the 6 weeks, it was the nicest thing I have ever tasted! Was out last night, and feeling pretty sick today, so I might give up beer this year

Im giving up bills, work and stress.

"to deny our impulses is to deny the very thing that makes us human" if something cheers you up or makes you feel a little better after stressfull days then it cant be bad, dont go overboard then you wont have to give up so much crap over lent. also you arent really meant to say what you are giving up, as the bible says "let your right hand not know what your left hand is doing"-or something to that extent :D
