TV Licence - Overcharge

I moved into a previously let house in mid January, I'm moving out of said house in April into a house that is already covered by a TV licence.

The Inspector came round in early Feb. I didn't cop it was an inspector. He asked for a previous tenant, I said she no longer lived here, he asked my name I gave it to him. THEN he said i needed a TV licence. (TV is clearly visible through front window).

That week, got a letter in the post addressed to me, if i dont pay be end of Feb they'll take action.

I have no problem paying the licence fee. But I rang them up and they're telling me I have to pay the full 120 for the year. I will only be there for two months.

I tried the only two months payment. I tried the pay the full amount and get a refund when I move out. She started quoting some TV licence Bill saying I lawfully had to pay the full amount even if I am only there two months.

    Any ideas?

Other than just paying the full amount.(not a problem other than the god damn principle)

Make sure you get your named changed off it when you do move out as you dont want the next group of people not paying it and your name on it as you might end up in court for not paying it.

Really? You shouldn't have to pay. I got a massive Waste Charges bill for my appartment when I moved in, despite not being there for most of the time. I kicked up a fuss and they altered it to be paid only for the amount I owned. You should check to see if you're entitled somewhere else, although the government website seems to suggest you're not...

A copy of your rent agreement will fix this.
Take out the licence backdated to when you moved in.

The case will be thrown out of court.

As regards moving in two months.
Auction the remaining ten month licence on e-bay :D

I've never actually done this but in theory it could work and hey, there might even be someone who will pay more than face value for it...Come to think of it, someone else who has had a visit from the inspector might,in an effort to get off, you can say you were living with them...

My house just had to get a TV licence and we are only going to be around til the end of May and you arent able to pay just the small amount for the few months....luckily we have a decent landlady and she agreed to pay half of it for us. which she is totally within her rights to say no to that. the whole TV licence thing stinks. I know we're paying for RTE tv and radio etc......but RTE is pretty crap and really not worth the money. the only good things they show are programs from other countries...(with a chance of setting into trouble for that statement...its my opinion!!)
