Mine is Hamburger Hill. It looks so real. I know private ryan does too but i don't like that one. There's a part in it where a guy get's his arm blown off and doesn't even notice coz there's so much **** going on around him. It's just such a classy film. There's a brilliant poemy thing at the end of it as well.

I've said it many times before but the thin red line is mine. Followed closely by Platoon and Saving private Ryan.

I saw the original version of All Quiet on the Western Front in the IFI recently.
I think that this is probably the best (anti) war movie you are likely to see, ever.
The fact that it was an American movie about German soldiers made in 1930 makes it even more incredible.

    Band Of Brothers definetly.
    But that probably doesn't count.

Das Boot, and Schindler's List are definetly fantastic.

Honourable mention goes to Blackadder Goes Forth.
The final episode really does tug on the old heart strings.

    Mine would have to be-
    Hamburger Hill.
    Full Metal Jacket.
    Schindlers List.
    Saving private Ryan.
All quiet on the western front.
    Patton.
    Das Boot.
    The longest day.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head-Cross of Iron is also quite good.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 88,972 ✭✭✭✭mike65

I forgot Cross Of Iron, also worth catching -
The Big Red One if you can find it.

    1 Full Metal Jacket
    2 Platoon
    3 Apocalypse Now

Dunno why I like the Vietnam ones better than the WW ones.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 432 ✭✭ChumpStain

    Mine are:

    Platoon
    Full Metal Jack
    Apocalypse Now
    Deer Hunter
    Braveheart

    Does the Pianist count?

I also really like Casualties of War, but its too much like Platoon. And am I the only one here who didn't really like the Thin Red Line or Black Hawk Down?

Midway is rubbish, and make sure if it comes on that its not the 3 hour version which included 60 mins of romantic subplot.

Kellys Heroes was deffo WW2 but with reefers maaaaan!.

Definitely... It's an amazing war film. One that's not afraid to keep its cameras pulled away from the action.

id have to say apocalypse now tbh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭Davey Devil

    In no order:

    Bridge over The River Kwai
    Apocalypse Now
    The Deer Hunter
    Schindler's List
    Paths of Glory
    The Great Escape
    The Pianist
    The Thin Red Line

You have to have Band of Brothers, just think of it as a really long film.

(plus I must try and get a copy of Stalingrad somewhere as well)

3 for 30 in HMV Henry Street. Bought it a few days ago but have yet to watch it.

For me it has to be Das Boot. It's far more interesting to see WW2 from the German point of view.

    After that it's
    Saving Private Ryan
First half of Full Metal Jacket
    Hamburger Hill
    Platoon
    Schindlers list
    Apocalypse now

Hey retro, check out the film 'Stalingrad' if you want another movie from a German point of view. Well worth a look. (its in German too, like Das Boot).

It's a VERY long time since I've seen midway and was just wondering - ta.

Kellys Heros was set in WWII alright - but it was supposed to be a reflection on the war in Nam.
A bit like the way "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly" was allegedly a commentry on the trench warefare of WWI (fighting over the bridge) and WWII (concentration camp)

Read it in a book about spagetti westerns.

No the Thin Red Line is a poor film,as is windtalkers-the guy who said pearl harbour-that was the worst "war" film i have ever seen in my life.Full of plot holes and that romantic crap that was tacked on for the titanic effect was riseable.

Gotta be Apocalypse Now Redux or Saving Private Ryan

IF Band of Brothers could count though that would be it

I prefer the shorter version of the film... While elements of the Redux edition do improve, too much of it is just ****. And long... And dull... My perfect cut of the film would be somewhere in between the two.

    1.apocolypse now redux
    2.a bridge to far
    3.black hawk down.

    YOu guys are the best...

-I have to do a presentation on war films in 2 weeks i'll just watch all the films you guys have named and i should be fine.

-On a technicality: Unless a war film has a large combat scene as a central scene to its storyline (d-day in SPR) then its not technicaly a war film AND it must be set in the 20th century. This is according to the "Genre and Hollywood" text by Steve Neale.

Films like Braveheart fall under the genre of EPIC

Schindlers list etc are not technicaly war genre films But other genres with war as a setting.

The question i must ask is then...What is DAS BOOT??? Though it has no major combat scene in it in a conventional manner it cannot be easily defined in other genres.

    is'nt film studies interesting
(ignore this post like my last 10 were and i shall make the massacre of the boards a real life adaptation!!!!)
