Bad channel 4 and Discovery on Dub NTL Analogue

    Hi,

    I have had on and off problems (mostly on unfortunately) with my Channel 4 and Discovery on NTL Analogue. They are invariably very noisey with running lines (like lightening flashes) of static scrolling down the screen. The intensity of the noise varies with occassional lapses into normality. I have complained before but the bloody NTL engineers must have the quietest knocks in the world - I have twice stayed at home only to discover a little note in my letter box saying they'd called! I have tried a booster to no avail.

    Anyways three questions :-

    1. Has anyone else seen this issue?
    2. Does anyone have any idea what might be special about Channel 4 and Discovery?
    3. I recently realised that the TV/FM box on my wall is actually splitting my signal from one cable into two and apparently splitting between TV and FM signal - is this correct? I'm jugding this from the blurb on a new TV/FM box I saw in Roches. Could this signal split be causing my problem?

    Any ideas or suggestions as to how to diagnoise the problem further would be much appreciated.

    Not sure if this'll help but my parents had a similar problem with channel 4. I bought a cable TV signal booster (in either Maplin or Peats) and that sorted out the problem.

    I actually have tried a booster and it didn't help. I also brought the telly right over to the main box and connected it directly to the incoming cable (unscrewed it from inside the box) and I still have the trouble.

    Further investigation (including reviewing a previous post from Cableguy) suggests that maybe what I am seeing is too strong a signal rather than too weak. Apparently this can get worse during cold weather? The suggestion appears to be to try a variable attenuator. I'm going to try getting my hands on one over the weekend to see if it helps any.

    Any one have any thoughts on that approach?

    Thanks for that reply cableguy. As you suggest, I think the reality is I need to do a service call :(

    I tried to get a variable attenuator but Peats don't do them any more and Maplin "only have whats out on the shelf". In the end I picked up a fixed 12db one from maplin to see if it any effect but it didn't (just reduced the quality of the other stations slightly).

    I'll book a service call when I can get some time off work and let you know.
