Not sure if this is the right place for this.

Anyone know how bar extensions work?

How much they cost, how long are they?

all I know about them is what I was told by a friendly flatfoot; if you request a substantial dinner (not just sandwiches & a glass of milk) after serving hours & during a bar extension, the pub is legally obliged to give it to you. Apparently theres no such thing as a bar extension, it's a different type of license. Hence the requirement that they must serve food if requested.

So next time you're out of your gourd after 15 pints of best in your local, request a nice lamb dinner for yourself and see what they say :D

AFAIK you need to order food, therefore giving an extension till 2 am.

They're officially known as 'Exemptions', or 'Special Exemptions', and allow a Pub or Club to serve alcohol after the normal closing hours. Monday to Saturday an exemption can be granted until 2.30am, 1.00am on Sunday. The requirement for food to be served during the hours of an exemption was abolished in the Liqour Licensing act of 2000, before that legally Pubs or Clubs were obliged to provide a 'Substantial meal' to anyone on the premises (remember all those dodgy chicken curries Clubs used to serve?!). Generally all that is required for a premises to get one now is a Public Dance Licence along with approval from the local Gardai and Fire Officer. They are issued normally on a Monthly basis in the local District Court, and including Solicitors fees cost somewhere in the region of €200. If you're having a 21st etc, the cost to you will vary greatly from venue to venue.

As suggested, but not implicitly implied before, generally, an extenstion can be for as long as the bar man wishes.

However, it all comes down to legal implications. It depends on the alcohol license and to what time they are allowed to sell alcohol to.

    Simple as that...

..if that *was* the question you were asking...
Everything [foodplace] has a license to adhere to.

/edit. For example, if you stay in a hotel, you can drink at the bar all night/morning as long as you're a paying member of the hotel. The reasons speak for themselves...
