Not only have they appeared to axe to new series of Smallville after only 5 episodes (after giving it the gas chamber slot of 1pm on a Saturday), they also appear to be showing new* episodes of That 70's Show at the ridiculous time of 2:30am on a Monday morning.

    * "New" in that they're now two years behind the U.S.

    According to DigiGuide:
    Saturday 28th February 13.35- 14.30 Smallville: Magnetic. Series 3, Episode 7

It would seem that it was just dropped in favour of Six Nations Rugby last week. The same goes for Saturday March 6, Rugby (2 live matches) 13.00 - 18.05.

    travesty.

"Smallville" is crap in my opinion, however it might be popular, i'm not sure.
TROUBLE show new episodes of "That 70s show", which shows an extreme lack of demand. Altough I like this show, I can never watch an episode through, and certainly wouldn't watch it routinly.

I still enjoy 'Smallville' although I want Lana trampled to an actual bloody pulp. She's irritating. There's some average episodes ahead, and a couple of decent ones. Little bit disappointed with it of late, to be honest. Less freak-of-the-week please...

Angel gets a lot better, as of this week though. There's some good news. Episode 3x14 - "Smile Time" (seven weeks away) is sheer brilliance, as some of you might guess if you looked at the trailer.... Just have to plug that episode...

    That 70's show isn't on tonight at 0230....? :(

Yes RTE are doing such a bad job with there schedule espically on N2.

While you may not like Smallville or That 70's Show both shows are quite popular.
a mediocre sit-com and a mediocre american drama get the slots the deserve.....

What surely you are talking about Friends and Coronation Street.

It is insane on RTE's part that they buy these shows and don't give new episodes prime time, lets face it if we want to see friends and the simpsons again and again we would turn over to E4 and Sky One that is what they are there for.
"New" in that they're now two years behind the U.S

When that show started on N2 they where way a head of the US at one stage, Madness I tell u Madness.

But one thing that is gaurtee on N2 is crap documentry's from Nat Geog or Repeats of Docs already shown on RTE One or TG4 at 8 every night (However Wednesdays may have Chams Leag on..... Ok not really a gaurnette)

I was a huge fan of that show when it first air and would go and check out the website and RTE was a head of the states by a few weeks. They give the orginal air dates or dates on when they would be showing a new episode and they were behide

For what it's worth I read an article somewhere a while back that suggested RTE are deliberately buying up any US show that has good 'word of mouth' simply to deny rival TV3 of getting any them. Once bought they realise they've nowhere in their schedule to put their purchase and just end up dumping them in the late night schedule and more or less forget about it and/or the fact that they might actually have a fanbase who wants to watch em. Hense you get this irregular/haphazard scheduling

Might not be the truth behind the situation but it certainly makes a modicum of sence when you examine it.

surely thay have viewing figures for these programs. even if they are on late into the night, are they getting more viewers than whats on before them??

Mybe I'm misunderstanding but you're saying that The 70s show was aired in Ireland before it aired in the US?

    Yeah!

I would say it was distribution at the time, a mix up prehaps, I thought it was unusual at the time to but there you go. I am possitive, it was only a few episodes about 3 or so. they weren't a year a head.

Also Freaks And Geeks the full series was shown on RTE before NBC, due to NBC cancelling the series mid way through its run.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,267 ✭✭✭Exit

    Ha, that's bizarre!

It happens quite often that the remaining episodes of a cancelled show gets their first airing here due to the high number of US network output that RTE in particular buy, in some cases these episodes never get shown in the US at all. It is pretty much unheard of that popular network shows get aired outside the US first though.
If you can remember which episodes they were Elmo, i'd be interested to know.

Used to watch The Drew Carey Show but now Net 2 show it at 2 in the morning - why do they bother?

With the risk of shows being leaked on to the internet before being aired the US networks have to be really careful. Strangely about the 2nd or 3rd episode of 24 this season was leaked by an advertising agency and I saw it before it was aired in the US :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

The shows where aired during the summer of the first season in the states but had been show a couple of week earlier here on RTE. I think RTE had mix up episodes and had shown them in the wrong order. But RTE finished the series before Fox. Also fox seem to take good breaks in between showing new episodes. I can tell you that the one where the go up on the water tower and draw the hash leaf was shown here first.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,267 ✭✭✭Exit

Yeah, Fox are at the moment taking a five week break from showing 24 because there's only 24 episodes whereas other shows have about 29/30 and they want their season finale to air at a different time  So yeah, maybe it is possible that it happened like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,924 ✭✭✭Cork

But seriously RTE TV has lost much audience share over the last number of years.

Things are pretty bleak for them.

I really think, time is running out for them.

They need to start making quality home produced programmes.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

Certainly in the last few months TV3 have taken a major share of RTE's audience.

However N2 has still got a static 9 - 10% viewership, however I would think that RTE should be think about making N2 strong so that it can pick up RTE One's Lost Viewers.

Certainly N2 could if it wished wipe the boards with TV3 its just a matter of a better schedule and more shows like "Des Bishops work experience" and "The Panel".

A more suitable times, the schedule on N2 is its main Down fall.

Oh and bring back N2 not ****ing RTE NETWORK TWO.

I seriously RTE has not gotten over the loss of Conoration Street.

Making programmes like the "Big Bow Wow" won't save RTE.

Buying imported programmes won't do much for them either.

RTE has got to produce relevant programmes to its audience not "off the Rails".

Most 1 hour shows have 22 episodes per season, 1/2 hour sitcoms have 25/26. Can't think of any with as much as 30.

i loved fastlane once and it got canned :(, i sort of like the oc on tg4 now its the only thing i watch on the channel, but it doesnt have enough guns or supercars.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

I seriously RTE has not gotten over the loss of Conoration Street.

No but it is only one show and when you look at the top twenty shows on TV3 they tend to just be its ITV output with a couple of American shows (Which includes Judge Judy, getting daytime into your Top twenty isnt very good when you condsider it only gets 115,000 viewers, so you can guess that with out Coronation Street TV3 would have left our screens a year or so ago)
Making programmes like the "Big Bow Wow" won't save RTE.

No but its a step in the right direction, and lets face it Footballers Wifes over on ITV Eire isn't much better, actuall it's worse.
Buying imported programmes won't do much for them either.

Yes Certainly if its only to stop TV3 buying them, and they continue to put them on at stupid hours
RTE has got to produce relevant programmes to its audience not "off the Rails".

Relevant????? perhaps Off The Rails isn't relevant to you, but lets face it, it grabs 300,000 viewers. It's well produced and both presenters are good at what they do. Just because something isn't relevant to you doesn't mean they shouldn't make them. I don't think much of Off The Rails but then its not made for me.
i loved fastlane once and it got canned

Yes but that TG4 who make the most with there excellent american output (sorry not a fan of the OC very Teeny Boppery, same producer as the fastlane.) And TG4 allow there shows go out a a reasonable time.

Lets face it the main problem with N2 (and I am just picking on N2) is its schedule, and lack of alternative Irish programming on it. Why? was Song From Another Room put on after the news???? where they afraid it wouldn't get the viewers???? Just an acailmed Irish TV programme with great Irish Talent on another Stupid Hour.

My mistake. The reason they're taking the 5 week hiatus is because other shows take breaks from showing new episodes, and show repeats due to running up against huge specials like the Superbowl, Oscars, and special episodes of other shows. So, Fox want the final episodes of 24 to go up against the final episodes of other shows.

Really RTE's cutting of shows mid season has gone beyond a joke. They've just announced that they've shown the 'last' episode of The Gilmore Girls as well-half way through the third season.

Personally I never liked Off The Rails although I would be in their target audience. I find the presenters smug beyond belief and would really prefer something less pretentious and more practical like Looking Good which used to be on BBC.

In relation to 24 being off the air over in american, it's because Kiefer Sutherland got into to a bit of a fight and his face was scared so there holding off doing any film of his scenes until he's better.

they probably write him into a fight scene

Looks like Network 2 are dropping the ball again tonight.... they are postponing Scrubs this week in favour of showing the Oscars. That means that Sky One will jump ahead this week......
