Summary: can i continue my lifestyle but just train alot and still put on muscle

Im 21, 5'9, 10st ... quiet fit even tho i dont do much
eat nothing but SH*T bout 3-4 bars of chocolate a day(and crisps etc), 5 currys and 5 chippers a week on top of regular dinners (chips, coddle, chicken, frys etc), dont put on any wieght (but thats a different thread haha)

so eat enough to be 20st... drink about 2litres of coke/7up a day and a stupid amount of water ontop of that (at least 3 pints)

have a good enough bench press in me room, started off couldnt lift anything!! bout 15kg ... after a few months could do 35-40kg so was well please with that started seeing some results .... but then just stoped being able to lift more and stoped seeing any changes... kinda lost interest figured that if i wanted to keep building muscle etc id have to take it serious and change my whole lifestyle and diet...

Is this true tho, i know a little about training like read a book (skipped diet section haha) so know about reps and sets and going till the breakin point and pushin yourself and rest for a day r two etc etc .... but im joining the ucd gym tomorrow and just wondering if im not willing to change my diet (will eat suppliment etc but dont want to restrict my eating at all) would there be any point?

like is the stuff im eating going to stop me completly from putting on muscle or just slow it down ... or if i just add suppliments does it not matter what else i eat?

    thanks
    Paul

You have to decide what you want to do personally , then you can ask us for advice about what to do next.

    tunney is right.

In five years time you'll be a fat b*stard, or at least well on your way to it. I'll gladly bet money on it. It' won't happen quickly, it'll be a slow, steady progression.

You can eat like that in your teens and perhaps even early 20's. But not much past that.

Maybe you'll put on only a pound every two months. That's only half a stone a year. But a few years on, and you'll be 13, 14, 15 stone.

To put on muscle requires protein. trade the curry's and chips for some steak, pork chops, chicken, fish, etc. You don't have to 'restrict' your diet, you just need to stop eating sh*t ;) You don't need supplements or anything like that, and you certainly don't need a diet of boiled chicken and salad either. You just need to read the diet chapter.

You might also want to look at more than just bench pressing. Bench pressing works your arms, shoulders and chest. What about your legs, back etc.

    Just curious...

Anyone got any good links to nutrition? Would going to a nutritionist be worthwhile ?

I haven't been ablt to do any real training fort about 9 months (Rugby) and have lost alot of my tone / fitness levels and gotten some extra flab here and there ;)

Ideally I'd like to have a good diet that would improve the results from my gym work. I'd like to gain more muscle but I run into a few problems.

1 I'm not too sure what I should be eating. Chicken, Steak Fish and spuds are really the only thing I'd know that would possibly be a good step (I dont want to eat those for breakfast ;), dont have access to them at lunch!)

Nah, don't bother - just keep on the coke and crisps, you'll be fine, don't listen to these fools! Sure it's way too much effort anyways.

Haha i know in a few years ill be really fat if i don’t stop :) but while i can get away with it i will haha and sure im actually trying to put on weight!

Rs seemed to have the answer i wanted but don’t know is that backed up by the rest of you'se ... as for the only having bench press, i have the leg curl thing and pulley weight thing the one u do with the bar at the back of your shoulders (very bad with names as you can see) but im joining the gym today so wont really be using it anymore, will just get the trainer to make out a workout to stick to.

as for Genghis .. i know what i want to do personally ... i want to still eat what i want when i want and i want to go to the gym to put on muscle ... what i asked is was it possible to do both, or do you have to cut down on all bad stuff and eat like a fat woman on a diet, going into shops and looking at the back of bars and food for fat content, not going to the pub for a few pints, etc etc because im on the body building diet .... like can you live a normal life but still have a good bit of muscle, just a noticeable amount, not president Arnie amount of muscle.

I know im probably the most offensive thing to happen to body builders but i don’t mean it like that, i really do respect people who take it so serious. im just being honest and know i wont be able to cut down 100% on chocolate and soft drinks etc and live my whole life around building muscle.
    thanks again for any advice.
    Paul

Believe me no one is going to take offence, not from someone who boasts about benching 35-40kg, not even endurance athletes never mind bodybuilders.

My point was that I don't think you will be able to do both to the extent you want to. Eating all that crap is not good for you, and while some workout will achieve some results, you will always be limited by your diet. Like everyone else, you must decide the balance you want (i.e. by how much you want to build muscle, and how much of the lifestyle you want to give up).

A good way to think of it is like professional soccer in the 60s / 70s and 80s. Then players would routinely eat pretty much any crap they wanted, many of them smoked, and drinking was a daily part of the culture - sometimes the morning before a match. Nowadays players are typically fed a very controlled diet by their clubs, drinking is not allowed but for certain circumstances, and when was the last time you seen a player smoke?

While both generations of footballer were 'fit', and looked that way, there is no comparison in the performance of todays players to yesteryears, and the game has become more athletic as a result, and only the most committed player survive.

I know that the outcome you seek has little to do with football, but you will see the point - that diet and lifestyle factors have a substantial impact on the benefit you get from training.
