First off sorry if i have this in the wrong place, ive been scratching my head trying to figure out where to post this

Anyway, i sent a registered letter off to Germany (something i do a lot). This was two weeks ago, and it wasnt delivered, or even attempted delivery. Normally when i do this i check it on anpost.ie and its never been more than three days from post office here to delivery there. I sent it to a relative and have done this 15-20 times without a hitch.

Anpost.ie tracker system says "ARRIVED" in Germany on the 11th and nothing since.
The biggest issue is that i had CASH in the envelope, but hadnt declared that when i registered it.

Basically, do i have any comeback at all against An Post, seeing as A) It was never delivered and is no longer in their jurisdiction (sp?) and B) that the contents of the envelope werent declared?

    TIA :)

It was "only" 80 Euro, but the main thing im peed about is that i sent the mail registered so delivery would be guaranteed.

Go to the post office... If you regiestered it then it is their responsibility... Did you insure it? Is insurance included in the registering? SO MANY QUESTIONS!!?!??!?!

Go and ask at the post office.

It's illegal to post cash to Germany as an anti-money laundering measure on the German side.

Why did you spend what €3+ on sending it registered post when you could have sent it direct to their bank account for €0.50?

Replace "Germany" with "Nigera" and a picture starts to form.

I sent €20 cash off to Germany last year to pay for a CD I won on ebay

It was sent by registered post

The German post office attempted to deliver it to the recipient but he was not home so a note was left telling him to call to his local PO/Sorting office to collect it

He called in the following day only to be told that the letter could not be found

I ended up sending the money again - by Bank Transfer which he had within 2 days,

I wrote to An Post asking them to track it and told them the value of the envelope was €20
They confirmed with me that the German Post Office had lost it and about 6 weeks later An Post sent me a cheque for €20

Moral of the story: if the cash was sent in an ordinary envelope it would have been delivered without a problem

When you Register the item it is automatically covered for a certain sum 150-250, website will tell you anway. You are meant to write down the value of the item when it is sent so that a claim for that amount can then be made if somthing goes wrong.

Might not be the best idea telling them cash was in the envelope, tell a white lie and give them the correct value but for somthing other than cash........heres one, a set of unused concert ticket for say....the beatles, you should get your money back, probably just a matter of when.

What happens when the German Authorities find cash and declare it? (snigger..fat chance of that) Is it sent back to the original sender? You should ask that question before telling any white lies tho ;)

There is a small possibility it will be returned.

I had a similar problem last year where a registered latter containing exam results was sent to me in Canada. After three weeks (thats twice as long as a normal letter would have taken) An Post admitted that registering a letter in Ireland only allowsthem to track it within Ireland, once it's arived in the destination country it's no longer their problem. Mine turned up a week later, but you should probably get in touch with the German postal system to clear it up.

i sent some mail in registered post before with cash in it and was told by the woman behind the counter that cash isn't covered in the event that the mail is lost, only cheques and the like... this is what i was told anyway

There is an unofficial work to rule in place at the moment involving a lot of An Post staff. Mail sorting and airmail has been delayed slightly.... Perhaps this is where your answer lies....
