what's the maddest (or most sane) thing you've done to raise funds to record your CD (album or demo) ?

I was in a band once (in the US) when the singer/songwriter used the system from 'The Producers'.... he had about 12 women who all thought they 'owned' 100% of the album. Needless to say we didn't hear about this until after he had to skip town 'cos the cops were looking for him....

Well, I worked in Snap Printing for almost 3 months to raise money for my studio.

We sent a demo to Bill Clinton in 95 asking for a lend of £200 to finance our album and he could play sax on it if he wanted.

    Got no reply.

Get all your friends, family, friends of friends, friends of family....you get the idea, to contribute a token amount e.g. 10euro. For their donation, they get a free, signed copy of the resultant CD. Alternatively, you could list their name on the CD artwork, they'd like that. It works. The ones with money will willingly give more....in no time you've got your recording studio money saved up. Go forth and multiply.

enter a battle of the bands competition. the prize is usually free studio time. Thats what my band did and we're recording a 5 track ep for nothing in a few weeks. The bands that enter these things are usually pretty bad so winning isn't hard if youre halfway decent. If you cant find a battle of the bands competition, rent out a venue and put on your own....... or.............. you could play some gigs and not blow the cash.
