    I've just ordered a S5000 from http://www.mcneelysdepot.com

Its at e346 today including duty and delivery. The minolta Z1 is even cheaper at e335 but the styling mightnt be to everyones tastes.

I was looking for a big zoom camera with continuous shooting so had to sacrifice a bit on image quality (at this price range). So it depends on what you plan to use it for ...

The Canon A80 is regarded by many as the best feature/quality to price ratio at the moment. It costs just below 400 euro so it's almost within your budget.

Pick up a camera, check its specs against the A80 and the A80 is likely to win ;)

I recommend you to read this long review from the begining to the end, it will give you hints on how to make your choice:

My views on the S3000: It is bulky, accepts only xD cards which are much more expensive that CompactFlash cards and has a very long startup time (3.5s). One of its advantges is its telephoto zoom.

Edit: xD cards are on average twice the price of CompactFlash cards

Looking at Komplett, I see your point.. Substantial price difference..
BTW: Having returned from the US, memory cards there are substantially cheaper..
Picked up my Olympus 256MB xD card for €80 (although the currency favourability did help!)
Still not nearly as cheap as the CompactFlash cards on Komplett.

Anyone have a website which compares the functionality of the memory types?
I nuderstand that the xD cards have a much lower energy requirement - but I stand to be corrected!

I think the functionality of the different types of card is very similar. They're all designed anyway for low power consumption. There is one exception maybe: the SD cards have a write-protect switch on the side of the card...
