David Bowie and The Darkness Headline Ireland's Only Multi Stage Music Festival Weekend
    (Source:
    MCD.ie)
“..same dates, same venue, same ticket price, same campsite, same incredible atmosphere & non stop music fun, with just a fresh new name – OXEGEN,” Dave Fanning 2FM.

“A Rose by any other name... still the best music festival in Europe...in with the new, out with the old - OXEGEN the new name for Witnness”Tom Dunne Today FM

David Bowie and The Darkness are set to headline Ireland's only annual, multi-stage music festival, ‘OXEGEN’, which takes place at Punchestown Racecourse, Naas on Saturday 10th & Sunday 11 July 2004 - subject to licence.

Tickets for the festival will go on sale Friday 5th March 2004 priced as follows:

    One Day – €59.50
    Two Day - €110.00
Two Day including camping – €130.00
All above ticket prices are the same as last year and include booking fee.

Following his phenomenal sell-out performances at the Point Theatre last November, DAVID BOWIE is back to headline the Main Stage at ’OXEGEN’ in the manner in which only the original icon can!

A true legend in his own lifetime, Bowie is worshipped by fans and fellow stars alike - from Mick Jagger to Iggy Pop, Lou Reed to Brian Eno, he has left his own indelible mark on their own musical landscape.

With a career spanning four decades and a huge back catalogue of landmark hits that include ‘Space Oddity’, ‘Jean Genie’, ‘Changes’, ‘Heroes’, ‘Lets Dance’, ‘Rebel Rebel’, plus the on-stage persona to accompany them, Bowie at OXEGEN is set to go down in Irish music festival history.

THE DARKNESS will be bringing their spandex-clad rock ’n’ roll circus to the Punchestown for their very first Irish festival appearance.

The Darkness stole all the headlines at last night’s 2004 Brit Awards picking up a trio of Awards - ‘Best British Group’, ‘Best British Rock Act’, and the ‘Best Album’ Award for their hugely-acclaimed debut album, ‘Permission To Land’.

Their meteoric rise to superstardom has taken their debut album, 'Permission to Land' to Number One and now they’re storming the U.S. Billboards charts with over a-quarter-of-a- million sales to date.

Numerous other artists set to join the line-up will be announced over the forthcoming days...hours....so make sure to listen out for your favourite act!

But it's nice to have the title of this year's festival officially confirmed so we don't have to call it Witnness/Oxygen/Whatever.

Witnness, Oxegen ...... someone in MCD needs a spellchecker :D

Muse and the chemical bros. are confirmed for T in the Park, Oxegen's (sp?) twin festival, so i'd say we'll see them here too

Who cares what it's called? The name won't make it any better?

    Witnness sucked. Oxygen will suck.

    Carling weekend it is.

I take it you like punk and metal bands? ;)

Best festival in Europe? How ingratiating...

As far as I know the Reading Ireland festival isn't/wasn't planned to be multi-stage anyway!

Just one big stage or something! Besides they'll see that anyway because lets face it nothing has happened with Reading yet so at the min this is the only multi-stage concert. And also MCD won't be promoting Reading Ireland if it goes ahead, Aiken Promotions will be!

the plans for Reading Ireland is to have a full 2 day multi stage festival weekend for this year(they never applied for 3 day afaik) and have a seperate one day concert involving some of the bands from the third day at the carling weekend.
now that MCD own a significant portion of mean fiddler(the crowd that own and promote carling festival) it will probably be under the mcd banner unless aiken already had a deal drawn up

The Cure would be great to see at Oxegen.

Its going to take a bit of getting used to calling it OXEGEN. Still, they seem to manage to pull the big names to headline. Hopefully now they can get Muse and everybody (well, just me) will be happy.

www.oxegen.com is already gone anyway, I thought that might have been the reason for the spelling, i suppose they'll go for .ie

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭RichyX

    Doesn't sound great so far.
Bowie is grand but there's no chance i'm gonna watch those spandex clad muppets.
Just gotta hope the rest are better, I didn't go last year cus I thought the overall line-up was pretty weak.

according to hot press, N.E.R.D. have also been confirmed

although i dont like them they are a pretty big name. looks like oxegen will have a big name lineup this year as opposed to all that crap last year

Christ! N.E.R.D. and The Chemical Brothers. Chilli Peppers are starting to sound appealing...

Who the hell are OXEGEN? and why have guinness dropped out. Oxegen.ie oxegenfestival.ie/.com are all still available to buy. This shower dont seem to organised although the line ups not looking too bad considering theres only 4 bands so far. Last year was great hoping oxegen can keep the witnness spirit going. Still would like to see an oicial site up and running.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,894 ✭✭✭Mr. Fancypants

Outkast will be playing too aparantly.

Pixies are playing @ T in the park in scotland. So is bowie. So are the darkness.

Maybe the pixies might grace us with thier presence twice in the one summer?

I Belive it is Heineken who are sponsering it. Dunno how the thought of Oxygen...does seem very 02ish.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,221 ✭✭✭RichyX

It's definitly Heineken since they announced in the newspapers that they were taking over as sponsors. O2 already have their pop party in the park thing so doubt they'd be involved in another event like that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,714 ✭✭✭conZ

The Pixies wont be confirmed until a couple of weeks before Oxegen.

MCD or whoever are trying to get better numbers for the Chili Peppers gig as they have played here three years running.

They wont be announced until close to the Festival as a lot of people bought Chili Peppers tickets just to see The Pixies, and will most likely sell up or just not go.

If so, Hydrogen would have been a much more fitting name for the festival!!

With regard to the Pixies, I seem to remember Promoters last summer announcing David Gray playing Killarney as his only appearance live in Ireland that year yet once enough tickets had sold sure enough he was headlining witnness, so I wouldn't be surprised if the Pixies do end up playing Oxegen.

****in Quality! The Strokes! Delighted :D

Looks like the guy that posted the list on the 'ol Witnness thread was fairly accurate (after freaky scenery saying he was only pulling them out of his arse :p)

I didn't say that none of the bands he mentioned were going to play, I said he pulled them out of his ass, in other words that most of the bands he mentioned had no confirmation or indication that they would play (other than Bowie, The Darkness or Muse, obviously).
I hate fcking rumours like this with no backup. "Here's whose deffo playing"? Yeah right. Where's your source, your brother's best friend's uncle's friend?

According to the pixies site they're european tour ends on sat the 10th(the night they play T in the park) me hopes this in an error cause that + Muse (also playin T) would fricken rock. Fingers crossed that we copy T

Agreed, if this is a pointer for the rest of the lineup its going to be absolute ****e. Looks like the musical geniuses will be out en mass in the crowd that weekend - who knows, maybe we'll even have Busted yet and they can rename it the Childline 2004 festival.

O2 are the main sponsers of this.

Alcoholic drinks companies are no longer allowed to sponser these events. That's why the Roller Coaster Tour was dropped. Heineken are not allowed to sponser it and no one else is interested.

    Oxegen

The "EN" part of the word Oxegen looks alot like the "EN" at the end of Heineken

Also the way its spelt, kinda like Witnness and Guinness.............

I think its heineken, but i dont understand why Guinness would give it up, it must make them millions? or am i wrong?

    Sean

That logo is a freakin' sure sign that Heiniken are now the new sponsers. I have to say that it is a nice design, much better than the Witnness logo. If the overall presentation is improved over Witnness then maybe the name change won't be so bad after all .

The Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, Snow Patrol, Muse, Scissor Sisters and Dogs Die In Hot Cars have all been confirmed for T In The Park and rumour has it that Kings Of Leon, The Cure, PJ Harvey, The Dandy Worhols and Athlete are going to be added to the bill. This means that there's a good Chance that all these bands will play Oxegen. However REM played T In The Park last year but didn't play Witnness so there's no guarantee that just because a band is confirmed for one festival they'll automatically play at the other one. Also it's common practice for promoters of large events like Slane and Witnness/Oxegen to get foreign acts to sign an exclusive contract that prevents them from playing another major gig in Ireland either three months before or after the concert. This means that while The Pixies will be allowed to play a warm up gig in a small venue immediately prior to the Chilli Peppers gig (Eg. Vicar St) there's a good chance that they won't be allowed to play another major Irish gig only one month later.

Pink has been added now :(

damn mainstream music, why havent they got snow patrol or muse or franz ferdinand or kings of leon, just a few more decent bands along with the strokes, please god please!

OK, so let me get this straight -

Witnness has now been replaced by oxegen?

    ...

At least it's in Punchestown. When Witness went to Fairyhouse last year I knew they were on their last legs...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,272 ✭✭✭✭Atomic Pineapple

Its the same thing just with different sponsers

Witnness was in Punchestown last year, not fairyhouse

Witnness was in Fairy House in 2000. Last year was Punchestown. I prefered the layout in Fairyhouse...

Is this likely to be sold out quickly?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,714 ✭✭✭conZ

Nope. Tickets will still be on sale by July 10th.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,592 ✭✭✭Ro: maaan!

The camping ones might sell out. But not for ages...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 38 healy001

i think its a shame that the festival has to be sponsored by Heineken. it aint the best tasting beer, in fact i think its piss especially when its exposed to the heat and poured without care. can you imagne a carlsberg sponsored festival, it would probably be the best festival in the world. well from my eyes anyway cos i would be absolutely hammered for the whole weekend.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,810 ✭✭✭lodgepole

They'll stagger the ticket sales, a few thousand more camping tickets will be made available a couple of weeks before it. And if you still don't get one, just buy a two day ticket and either camp in the car park, or go down on the Friday and get a camping pass for €20.
