Are there any easy to use ip phone applications available for both macs(OSX) and pcs, to allow me to talk to someone over the internet with a pc or mac from my mac.

You can use iChat AV to talk to other mac users (and I think AIM users too), the same goes for MSN messenger.
But if you want to phone actual phone numbers, you could try this service (you need a VIC like the cisco ATA186/188 though) http://www.pulver.com/fwd/

I was checking out this a while ago for myself and i came across this proggie, Also allows you to make cheap international calls via a "real" handset over a LAN which is nice, costs $169 and they include $100 worth of calls and the phone,

Or just use the software itself if you like and use a headset

http://www.nikotel.com have a look - US calls for 1.5 cent odd, and irish mobiles for 25 cent, cheaper than calling from a landline during the day here :)

also you can use it for free to talk to PC - PC or MAC-PC users

nice stuff, seems to work fine, and is well supported, i'v sent a good few mails back and forth to these guys and they are really helpful.

Download the software and see what you think

    Hope this helps

    Steve

Well, if you just want to use headsets, the easiest solution would be taking a look at something on http://www.openh323.org

    For compatability questions visit http://www.openh323.org/fom-serve/cache/41.html

Anything ITU-T H.323 compliant should work.
