This article explains how new gene therapy can make muscles in rats grow super quick/large, and also gives wolverine style healing. They will soon be able to apply this to humans.

    Kinda cool eh?

At least when the robots attempt to take over the earth, we might now have a bunch of wolverine mutants to fight them! :ninja:

Actually this reminds me of this picture that was posted a while ago -

    1.gif

As you can see, the side effects include increased hair growth as well as super sexual powers (I'm pretty sure the other men in the picture are trying to hold the woman away from the super-rat!!)

    ...

Can you tell I'm bored??? :D

This was posted on boards a couple of months back and if im not mistaken the user that posted it was banned for a week. How the pic relates to wolveriene type healing abilities im not really sure.

perhaps the pic is supposed to show the side effects of the gene therapy??!!

personally i think messing around with human gene's is a bad bad idea!
not even considering the side affects to the human in question or even the evolutionary state, but just imagine how it would effect the social structure of the race people running around tearing people apart because they can, and they only way to stop is kill them, but wait you can't because they can hela twice as fast!!!

and wouldn 't this mean that like wolverine no would grow old and die normally, so your talking an almost complete stop in death rate's which means major over population!!!!!

And what side effects would it have on unborn children, they thought's of seen a new born baby crying because it has massive brain, internal organ and muscle defect's cause daddy or mommy wanted to be stronger!!!!!!!!!!:( :(:(

Well, actually, it is REALLY IMPORTANT. There is a form of socio-economic natural selection that occurs today (which replaces the more mundane reproduce or face gene extinction). This type of evolution takes the most beautiful among us and mates that set against the wealthy and famous. The children of these mergers belong to an elite caste with higher privelege than others.

Is this wrong? Perhaps, when viewed locally. But when viewed statistically over many generations, this acts as an evolutionary pressure that improves our genepool.

Over time, the "top" becomes quite heavily loaded with genes from those with money (presumably intellegence/beauty/skill allowed them to acquire and/or retain such funds) and those with natural beauty. The men from this upper caste (like all men) are very promiscuous and highly saught after by women who often have their children out of wedlock (happens very often with the rich and famous).

Simultaneously, the lowest caste in the population is washed every few generations in bloody wars that statistically prune the bottom of the genepool (yes, awful when viewed directly - but when viewed statistically over generations, it proves to be important).

The overall result is that over many generations the population becomes more beautiful, more intelligent and more athletic. Yes, of course, there are ugly, stupid non-athletic rich folk and beautiful, brilliant athletic poor folk as well... Remember, we are talking statistics here and even if the difference is a few percentage points this way or that, it makes a big difference over multiple generations...

But if you change the rules (e.g. plastic surgery and sports-drugs), natural selection stops working properly. Very much in the same way that paying welfare mothers to have babies screws with evolution, so does providing a means for lesser genes to pretend to be greater genes.

Don't get mad at me for saying these things - I am simply speaking about evolution. It is, after all, how we came to be - the stronger genes gave advantages that ensured their survival over the weaker genes... It still happens... That is all.

Does what is classed as beauty pass down from generation to generation? (genuine question)

but what your saying is a sort of spartan society were the weak are irradicated, to make the society stronger!!! Much like it probably was in the beginning, the strong male's mating with as many female's as possible, that's fine let them on, more power to them, that's seems to be a natural from of gene manipulation!!!

but this is bio genetically engineering superior human's, basically removing evolution!! all i m saying is that it's bad mojo to mess with it that's all!!!

    sigh ...

the people who reproduce the most pass on their genes the most ... if you have 7 kids and each kid has seven kids then you have and each of those has seven kids then you've got 343 great grandkids... so poor person who has lots of kidds has more of an effect on the gene pool than a rich person who has one or two kids.

the idea of buity does indeed change over generations generaly in a how much fat is right kind of way ... big brests/ small brests. beards/ no beards.
it's a slow fashion but its there.

    argh!!!

    No...

The poor person with the 7 kids gets to lose 5 in Vietnam, while the rich person with the 2 kids gets to see them graduate with their nice masters degrees and get jobs in Morgan Stanley.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,267 ✭✭✭Exit

Well, that's just opinion now. There's every chance that the 5 poor kids will survive Vietnam, and the rich person will die in a plane crash going to a business meeting.

I don't think any of our (average boards user) chances of passing on genes is any different than the chances of millionaires passing on genes. They have more money, so maybe better health care but that's not going to drastically increase their lifespan.
