The decision to close to Hydrogen thread is an interesting one, as was the decision to edit what I posted in that thread.

All the information which I posted is available on the net.

In fact, my suggestions were the result of a broadcast on BBC2 TV last week on the "Rough Science" program in which scientists had to build rockets from everyday materials. One of them chose to power his using a hydrogen/oxygen combination derived from everyday water using exactly the method that I posted.

If you want proof, check the following link:

    Rough Science Scientist Diaries

If you read some of the other posts, they suggested the use of chemicals which I would consider highly dangerous. Oh, and in case you are wondering, I do have a science background - been teaching it for almost 20 years.

I appreciate that the content of your posting was sound and I wasn't be any means picking on you, however I don't want this forum to be the reason anyone goes off to try an experiment at home that results in the production of a highly explosive gas.

It goes pretty much for any methods that either involve or produce a dangerous chemical. I'm all for the promotion of science and encouraging people to take interest but I'd rather see experiments like that carried out under supervision in a lab and not in someones kitchen.

Call me hypocritical, because god knows, I did some rather stupid things in the name of science when I was a teenager, but looking back I see how stupid I was and I'm sure there are many other people out there without the experience to realise this.If someone goes and blows off their hand or worse because of a thread here, I'd feel quite put out.

Its the same for biology/med too, no medical advice or remedies or advice on alternative treatments. The idea of this forum is education and discussion, it shouldn't be teh cause of anything that may do harm to any of the members reading it.

Many thanks for your reply. No offence taken!

I agree totally with your wish that people would not try any of this without knowing what they are doing or being supervised. Although having said that, I have seen the result of an experiment to produce hydrogen gas going horribly wrong, even when it was performed by an experienced teacher.

And in this day of "compo culture", the last thing that any of us wants is to be cited in a court case as the source of a suspect method!

    Keep up the good work,

    Mike
