Hosting Plan Speed

Is there any way I can measure the speed of my hosting plan? By speed I mean the time that it will take browsers to download the site. DMX gives an estimate of the download time at various connection speeds but how do I know if my hosting plan is fast or slow?

Is there an independent service that can answer this?

Hi Henri,

Use something like www.visualroute.com to check access speeds from around the world, or get traceroutes from a few different ISPs to see how it works, but measureing the 'speed' of a host is an extremely subjective process.

Can help measure ping from your desktop to a remote server.

Visual Route, as mentioned by steve-hosting36, is very handy.

You can also look at http://uptime.netcraft.com/up/graph/ which can give you some interesting data on uptime and IP block owners, server software etc.
