I am not over weight I would be under weight if anything but my chest is very flabby. Its like I have a bloody pair of tits. I never excercise and I can't stick the gym for more the a day, what is the best excersise to tone the chest area?

    Cheers.

If you're not willing to exercise I hear M&S have some nice bras.

Cardio is a must. Press ups, chin ups, pull ups (no not pull offs). try various types of pressups - arms at different widths, positions etc etc.

Tell us what weight and height and if possible what age you are !

Incidentally wrist measurement also for body type!

hmm, certainly weight loss via cardio excercise will help remove the fat in your chest.

Bench press or Press ups will build up the muscle in your chest and arms. They won't make the fat go away, but they will help shape you chest a little more and make it look better.

You may have a genetic pre-disposition to storing fat on you chest. Particularly if you are not overweight. General fat loss should remove it though.

PS. you will get no respect on this board if you're not willing to do a little real work.

    Thats very helpful.

Even if you just get into the habit of doing a few stretchs and press-ups (as tunney said varying these will help) every morning for even 5/10 minutes, before breakfast/shower whatever.. you need to start to try and stick to something small like that if you don't have the willpower/time to go to the gym everyday... any exercise will help.

Any time of seen someone post a like "I have problem .... but I don't do want to actually do any real work in order to get it solved" has gotten flamed to pieces on these boards. (and never by myself I might add)

Thnaks for the help lads. I am gonna start doing a few pushups every morning but the thing that I hate is I lose my appetite after excercise and never feel too good, will this go away after a while?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,584 ✭✭✭✭tunney

You lose your appetitie after exercise??? Thats a bit strange? You don't feel well after exercise???? That doesn't sound good!!!

Hey Eirebhoy you're having us on!

You're the guy drinking 8 - 9 pints a night on that other board

How in God's name do you expect to have a chest , let alone stay alive?

It was actually, despite the attempted sarcasm. Read this thread.

I find this aswell, for the first hour or so after a good gym session Im never hungry, even if I was slightly before hand. I can never understand the people who eat a meal straight afterwards in nearby shops/cafes.

Although in an hour or so (usually by the time I've cycled home) Im starving :)

I thought of this as soon as I read the first post, but did not want to bring it up. Mostly I thought of it because eirebhoy is not overweight, but has a dis-proportionate amount of fat stored on his chest.

Given that eirebhoy likes a few pints made me a little more suspicious. Alcohol has been linked with an increase in oestrogen levels in men.

Increased oestrogen can cause fatty deposits in you chest called gynecomastia. I don't think it's all that common, but it does happen. I think you have to have a genetic leaning towards it.

Anyone else in the family have the same problem? Dad? Brothers? even cousins?

It's probably not the problem, but it is a remote possibility. Perhaps it's worth looking into if gets any worse though.

You'd have to see a doctor then.

Don't mean to freak you out.

I saw a programme on BBC3 or BBC4 last week about the affects of drink and that was mentioned. As I only drink around twice a week I didn't think it could have anything to do with it. From what I know its not in the genes anyway.

A short run, swim or bike ride a few times a week will help too, to actually burn off the fat. push-ups will give you a better shape to you chest, but do little to remove the fat.

As for the not feeling well.

Try to eat about an hour before you excercise. Don't eat loads, but enough that you won't be hungry for a few hours. Then eat maybe an hour afterwards. This should have you feeling pretty decent.

I tend to feel a little light-headed if I have not eaten enough before I train. It's also much harder to focus mentally on training if you are hungry. Training first thing in the morning on an empty stomach may not be the best idea.

What exactly do you mean by "never feel too good after excercise"

I've started doing about 30 pushups whenever I feel like it in the house, I'm like a mad man.;) Anyway, its only been a day and my chest is sore (which is obviously a sign it is working). When I used to do pushups I would usually feel the affects on my arms but since I want to build up the chest area that is the only area I actually feel the affects. Strange...

I'd recomend doing pushups every other day. You won't get much benefit if you train muscles when they are very sore, because they have not had a chance to recover yet. As your muscles become used to the training, this soreness will lessen and will go away faster. If you are not sore at all the next day though, you didn't work hard enough :)

The spacing of you hands on the ground makes a difference in the muscles used. If your hands are fairly close together, you'll use your arms and shoulders more. If they are further apart, you'll use your chest more. Try it, you'll notice the difference.

It would not hurt to elevate your feet for a few pushups aswell. Do a few pushups with your feet up on a chair or stack of books, but keep your body and legs straight. They'll be a *lot* harder because you are supporting more of your bodyweight and because you will be using more of the upper portion of your chest, which is not as strong as the lower.

    Good luck

Not an expert in this, but I would have thought that if you can do 30 pushups, then your not getting much benefit from them. You'd be better off doing "harder" push ups and doing less reps. Maybe aim for 10-15 reps.

You can make pushups harder by elevating your feet as already suggested. Also you could do the exercise very slowly. Not just on the upward movement, lower your self very slowly too. You'll find that you'll get very controlled movement but you'll also be able to do less reps.

Another thing is to do weighted pushups. I have been doing these for a while. They require some improvisation to strap weights to yourself. But I have found them good. Have been doing them, for a while now and have built up my chest a bit. If I do a normal, non-weighted pushup now I feel like I'm going to take-off on the upward movment, it's as if I have springs in my arms or something :)
