    Hello

I was going to buy a computer but the considered opinion on these boards is to build one. For my first one I want to build one to use at home, surfing the net, using excel, word etc plus downloading pictures from my digital camera. I have use of computers at work also so I want to build one as cheap as possible about €300 as I might not have huge use for it and I’m not into games. I have a keyboard mouse and monitor already. I’ve got a knowledgeable friend to help with the build.
I intend to have AMD Duron CPU 1.6Ghz,
    256mb RAM
    40 GB HD.
Will get the parts from Marx-Computers, Komplett and shop4memory.

Can’t seem to be able to get an AMD Duron at Komplett.

Can anyone help me source a CPU less that the €46 on Marx-computers or if someone has any advice for me I’d appreciate it.

P.S thanks to everyone for all the info on this site and for convincing me to build my own, looking forward to the challenge

You'll need a graphics card and soundcard (unless that motherboard has them onboard) and a heatsink+fan for the CPU.

If I purchase off Jes-computer will I be subjected to extra (more) VAT when the parts come into Ireland?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,484 ✭✭✭✭Stephen

No, because Germany is in the EU you just pay the German VAT rate.

Is the extra charges, (approx €8 in the case above) the difference in VAT between their 17.5% and our 21%?

    Hi Decritic,

Don't know if this helps but you can pick up a samsung 80gb hdd for €65 in pc world at the moment , they also have phillips cdrw drives for €35 and some cheap(supposedly decent )ram. This might save on some delivery costs, plus upping your storage for higher res images from your camera.

    good luck

No it doesn't - but you'd be better off picking up a seperate graphics card anyway.

Sorry this might seem a stupid question, but do you need a graphics card and if so would a 32mb one be big enough, keeping in mind I’m not big into games. I would play ones like premiership manager etc alright.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 902 ✭✭✭thesteve

Yes you need a graphics card (if there isn't one on the mother-board), otherwise you don't have anywhere to plug your monitor in and the only thing you'll be playing on your PC is 'watch the hard drive lights'........

check the spec of any game you want to be able to play and you'll see what size you need, 32 megs is getting a bit dated at the moment.......

no offense or anything mate but I hope you have someone to help you put this together!!

Come on now, putting PC's together is like making lego, anyone who can follow instructions can build one.
