I saw this film the other day. Has anyone out there seen it? I thought it was superb, I liked the way it the first half was brutrally violent and disturbing and by the second half it had completely changed mood. The camerawork was amazing too. Is there anymore memento - backward style film that are around?

Saw it a while back. Thought is was one of the best films I've seen. Really risky method of constructing a movie, could have ended up glorifying the subject, as the camera only stops that sensation of sea sickness at the worst possible moment. That said, I never intend to watch it again. Never.

Can't think of any other films off the top of the head, but I'll have a look round.

Only stuff I could find was documentary called Liberty: 3 Stories About Life and Death

Also referenced as an influence on memento is Oliver Sack's book "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" has a story called "The Lost Mariner" which deals with a man who has lost his short-term memory.

Backward structure also can be apparently traced back to a Harold Pinter play called Betrayal.

There was an episode of Seinfeld called 'The Betrayal' that went backwards:

'Irreversible' is a total rip-off of it. It really irks me that film-makers constantly copy the work of others.

yes a film dealing with the destructive power of time and dealing with issues of rape and revenge is a complete and utter rip off a light hearted american comedy sitcom episode dealing with love triangles

what the hell are you on

Absolutely great film. As someone else said above, the first half is completely brutal, and many people may choose not to watch on, but it's only if you do that you find the reasons behind the violence - by the end of the film, the start of it seems somewhat justifiable.

And the camerawork... basically the whole thing seems like one big long shot... the camera is merely observing the action, flying from place to place and backwards through time like an interested viewer, stopping and staring fixated at the rape scene like it was a road side car crash. ****ing great stuff when you think about it :)

Memento was good - but the backwards 'technique' was basically used as a gimmick. It was far more in Irreversible.
