I'm in a production of west side story atm, and one thing that the director told us to be sure and do is NOT WATCH THE MOVIE

Everyone did of course, but i was just wondering, whats your opinion, is it a good or bad idea to watch a film version of a play your in

P.S. anyone in the new ross area who would be interested in being in said west side story, we still need gang members anywhere between 13 and 18, PM me for details

I personally wouldn't watch it .... your character may end up being like the other persons interpretation ... not that this is a bad thing ... but creatively it would be nice to be different.

If I wanted to see the film version ... I would have rented it out! :)
You might pick something new from the character that the film doesn't have ... your version.

Not really, i thought the guy in the film sucked :p

Though there was one line we decided to switch based on the movie, in the play tony and riff say "womb to tomb, sperm to worm" but in the film its "womb to tomb, birth to earth" which we all thought was better

I see no harm in watching the film as long as you can treat it as someone elses interpretation of the work and not let it influence your work too much.

It's one of those things where everybody's different. Personally I watch everything I can - listen to every cd I can get hold of and then develop the character from scratch.

The way I look at it is that there's no difference between watching the video and seeing another production.

Some people though always end up doing exactly what they see others doing and since a lot of other ppl will have see the video - it's quite obvious
