yes the postcount debate returns from its sabbatical.

What are peoples views on post counts ? Should they be hidden so that we can't see them apart from peoples tags such as "No life" etc ?

Will it cut down on the increasing amount of postcount envy thats been seen of late ?

I think maybe that you should have to click on their profile to see them, but I wouldn't get rid of them altogether.

I think they should be left. Just (temp)ban people who spam, or post rubbish in whatever forums.
That thread about Use25345345 or whatever was the biggest waste of time, cos if User2353423 had posted enough crap to be banned then he would have been banned wouldn't he?
The post count, posts per day and join date, give you a bit more info on each poster, which is good.
    Leave them say!

Their post count, posts per day and join date should have no relevance.

hmm...take away the posts per day.
or better still...have a check box in UCP to hide posts per day for other users.

leave my god damn post count and post count per day alone, alone i tell ya

I don't think spam is purely a function of post-counts. More the fact that some people are just f*cktards. Ban the spammers.

Post counts are handy for telling weather people have a lot of experience in certain topics. For example, if your on a Board like porgramming, or IOFFL, and someone gives you a tip without really explaining it, it can be handy to judge whether thats a helpful tip by their post count.

    I say keep it.

how does a post count help you judge if someone has experience in a certain topic? I could go post on the gardening forum right now and hand out advice... and peoples plants would probably die.

True. I never claimed it was an exact science, but in general, it works.

But thats the point right there, isnt it?

What does my postcount or my posts per day, have to do with my experience with programming or quantum physics or whatever.

People are using post counts to see how "old skool" someone is, and whether or not they should listen to their opinions. I know I myself am guilty of that very thing. That said, I'm perfectly comfortable about that and so long as its pretty clear how the game is played... I dont see a problem.

Muppets will be muppets, and if you block one avenue of muppetry then others will open up. The devil you know is better than the one you don't.

Personally I'd rather a different form of ignore button - the current one is too all or nothing. An ignore where I can see the posts - but I don't get notified about them. - or maybe something that changes their avatar or lightens the font colour or makes it smaller ?

If you have been in a forum for a while you get to recognise regular posters. If you are new then best thing to do is watch and don't take the first replies as gospel.

Allowing an option for more than 25 entries on a page for when searching for users posts would help, people on broadband, filter out users.

Post counts help spot the free advertisment muppets who make fake posts about how great company x is and how we should all use them.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭TheSonOfBattles

I think post count and post average should be gotten rid of as well. Date joined should be enough if your going on the theory that some people's opinions are worth more than others because they're on boards longer. The date joined would also help you spot people who are only one to advertise tbh.

As for substr, who's up for betting on how long it'll be before he/she is banned for constantly spamming the  and generally acting a bit of a prat. I'm only going on this thread by the way, haven't seen him post anywhere else, so don't give me crap about how my opinion is wrong, it may well be.

Yeah true. And if ur buying off someone in the FS forum you might have more confidance if the seller has a greater post count.

i've decided that going on this thread is enough to go by considering about 20% of his/her/it's total posts are on this thread and that we have a representative sample, i reckon he/she/it should be banned now now i tell ya muhhhhhhhhaaaaaa.

That's not relevant to the aims of the file sharing forum. And that's one pointless post too many on here.

Could have sworn that Victor had a postcount of 1 earlier today ...

Yeah that registration time thing is a great indication
If you look up the numbers of posts there are loads of people who have NEVER posted - but date would indicate they are in the old boys club.

You could have customisation of stuff displayed - turn off count/avatars as you wish

I think they shiould stay. That combined with reg date can give you a reasonable guage of someone's time in the conmmunity, and how much they are contributing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,046 ✭✭✭Dustaz

Hasnt this been discussed to death a few times before?

The system as it is works as a rough gauge in general. Just because a single user causes a stir for 5 minutes is hardly reason to change it.

Anyway, without post counts how is anyone supposed to form evil cliques and bully people? jesus man, think.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,905 ✭✭✭User45701

I expected everyone to agree on leaving the post counts but making it so that you have to click on the profile to get them - It is what makes the most sence Everyone will be happy.
