Staying single through the college years

How important is it to fully enjoy the boozing, flirting and partying of the college years as a single person?
Had this conversation with my brother and its his biggest regret of college being in a long term relationship. He split with the his ex-they'd been together since 18 and then at 25 he wanted to sample a life which he reckons he should have had at 18.
Anyone else felt like that?Anyone in relationship at college..does it prevent you from fully enjoying the student life?

I don't see why it should?

Granted it's not as exciting if you're avoiding all the thousands of STI catching oppertunities, but I'm sure if you really wanted one you can order it on e-bay?

Most of my mates are in long term relationships and it doesn't seem to be affecting their enjoyment of the experience.

grrrr, at least he has someone ya expletive deleted! ;)
were the couple practising celebacy when together?

plus 'the college years' should be a term only referenced by american students who live in dorms and are the basis for teen college romp films like american pie etc etc. irish college life is work work work, then a smoke-screen of one booze-up every 3 months and 'it's great craic', and any girls gotten are a result of 3 months hard ass-taxing! ;) some guys in college are working too hard on three fronts, college/work/girls.

If you're both in the same college doing the same course then it can be quiet fun

Being in a relationship in college is a load of pants. Why would anyone do that? Its cuz they feel all educated and think that they've met their 'soulmate' and all that bull. College is about sampling more than just education and social settings, its about seeing whether the grass is greener on the other side.

hmm i was in a relationship for all of college now in my final year now and recently single, at the moment the whole single life thingy is not all its cracked up to be and while i have some regrets that i didn't do the whole college thing i'd say they are quite easily out weighed by the good relationship we had.

i've felt pretty much exactly like your brother at times during my relationship that i may have been missing out on something, but what do i think i'm missing out on? **** all really, some random scores with people i don't know and trying to chat some one up i couldn't be arsed really

nope a relationship in college is fine

The single life in our society says we should get with people(usually) while you and they are drunk. How do you ever know what a person is really like when they are drunk?
All i can say is do what you feel at the time and dont have regrets about what could have been as long as you are happy in the moment.

Unfortunatly doing the latter Bicky is what mounts up the regrets in life.

Unfortunatly, doing the latter of what you said is what builds up the regrets Bicky. Might want to think that over a bit.

if you strive to do whatever it is that makes you happy, where do the regrets come into it?

"do what you feel at the time" <--- explain to me how this would not build up regrets? The point is, feelings come and go, following them is like following a blind man through a battlefield. You will always end up hurting yourself or others if you just followed the "high" of something such as: meaningless sex, drugs, alcohol, violence, whatever makes your personality happy for a few minutes. Im trying to say that its better to keep in mind more meaningful persuits in life.

if you do what you feel is right at the time, and don't waste your time worrying about what might have been or what could be. enjoy what is, don't worry about what might be.

Well if you're feeling that way while you're in a relationship, perhaps the relationship isn't worth being in?

Yes being single in college is a *lot* of fun ;)

im in a long term relationship and am also in the same course as my girlfriend. Im happy and I dont think Im missing anything. weve discussed it before, and although both of us have thought about it, we both agree that we are happy together and us breaking up for fear of 'missing something' that possibly doesnt exist would just make us both unhappy.

it all depends on your relationship, if you dont want to be in it your going to regret it no matter what situation your in. If you do want to be and your happy there, then your not missing anything

I'm in my third year in college, going out with my gf since the second week in first year. We're living together too. And tbh, i've done the single life, and i'm quite happy as i am. The single life can be a load of bollox.

Some people enjoy going out havin one night stands and havin what their idea of fun and what college life should be is,
Others just haven't found anybody that they wouldn't like to go out with and others are in happy relatonships,

It really depends what you want from ur college life and the person involved.
Personally i dont think anybody misses out on anything by havin a boyf/girlf in college but I know of other people who feel that they missed out on everyhting by being in a relationship,

People who have been in a relationship all through college always have a tendency to think that everyone else is going out and getting laid all the time and having this great time.

Truth is that if someone is doing that then they probably have standards that are pretty damn low and the rest of the people are spending a good bit of time on their own wishing that they could score.

Not that being single is a bad thing but if you're happy in a relationship stay in it because the whole 'crazy party life' that you're missing out on is probably only in your head.

chances are if you love some one you'll really want to be with them whether you are in college or not you'll only want to be with them you won't be considering what your missing out on because as far as your concerned your not missing anything
