Been shopping around for the cheapest I can get one of these for and this place doesn't look too bad:
    http://www.cam-ireland.com
Don't suppose anyone else has ordered anything from them? They look genuine but I'd prefere to be sure.

I would NOT use NY cameras.

    See here:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?s=&threadid=131684

The camera did arrive last Friday, two months after I ordered it but I had to refuse it. They are current trying to hold back refunding me my shipping cost as it an expense they had to incur! Terrible service and even worst customer services. I would not risk them again.

Canon 300D is a great camera. I got mind from McNeely's depot. They ship form the states but cover off all customs at their end so the price you pay is what’s on the site. Not a great saving but they're cheaper then the high street.

I've dealt with NY camera in the past and it was a pleasure, promt service and a great price. That was my experience maybe I was lucky but I doubt it.

As I understand it, the warranty on the 300D is country specific. You'd have to return it to the US if you bought it there if there was ever a problem. I was thinking of buying from the US and didn't bother because of this. Cam Ireland has the best price I've seen. Even beats Amsterdam duty free.

This isn't actaully true. Most manufacturers will honour your guarantee even if you bought it in a different country..

Ya the cam ireland price is very good, I too would go for that.

As for the NY cmaera issue all I can say it their standards must have slipped. That would seem to be the case with the others who agreed with me on the forum I posted.

Found a review on the web by an American who bought one at home, then travelled with it outside the US. When travelling he had a problem with it, but the Canon distributor in the country he was travelling in refused to deal with him on this basis. Some manufacturers do have world wide warranties, e.g. you can walk into any sony centre and they will deal with you. Some don't. All I'm saying is check it out first.
Maybe I should have said, the warranty on the 'Digital Rebel' seems to be country specific based on the review I read.

I've ordered from cam-ireland in the end - let you know if it arrives! :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 199 ✭✭innisfree

cam-ireland are highly recommended. I've ordered 2 cameras from them. One was actually a 300D (arrived in 4 days), though the other was unfortunately d.o.a. Rang them up, they asked us to send it back and they'd immediately dispatch another one. Even offered to cover postage.

My 300D arrived late this morning. All present and correct :)
Can't stop playing with the thing!

Cam-ireland told me they'd shipped it on Monday and they say that it usually takes 3-5 working days. Overall I'm pretty pleased.

cam-ireland camera prices for cameras look very competitive but their compact flash prices are very high. Abour €190 compared to €120 with komplett.

I've been thinking of getting one of these. A friend of mine suggested ebay but Im not sure about getting something like this from there. That irish online camera shop looks good but memory seems a bit steep. Which card did you get manmachine? I looked at one from B&H cameras in new york and the price is pretty, €980 with a 1GB card. My sister will be there in a few weeks so I may get her to pick it up for me.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 97 ✭✭manchine

I got the 1 Gb card in the end - just 'cos I hate running out of shots :)
From what people here have said I don't think I got the best deal on the memory. All in I got the camera, standard lens and 1Gb card for 1508 Euro (includes shipping + tax). Which was still much cheaper than buying it in town even after trading in the Canon 500N that I already have. So now I've got two cameras and saved cash overall - not complaining too much!

I see a potential problem ordering from NY camera or any american retailer. They have different electricity sockets and suchlike to us so it is likely that the battery charger you receive will be useless.

This could also occur with cameras ordered through camireland (given that they are based in germany)
Can anyone who has ordered from camireland confirm if the battery charger they received had a standard 3 pin socket on it or was it the european two pin type?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

I've discovered since that the 300d is plastic. Will get the 10D, more rugged. It'll last longer herefore better value.

You'll get the right power supply.

Not only that.. the 10D is a superior camera as far as function is concerned. €500 cheaper than in the shops too, not too shabby!

Did you consider the Nikon D70 an excellent camera with a lot of features usually only found on the Professional line of digital SLR's plus by a lot of reviews it is a lot better than the Canon 300D. Not to mention that it can take full resolution images at 3 frames per second in raw, and jpeg format, with no lag because of its built in fast writing buffer.

Although I note that the cam-Ireland price is only slightly cheaper €1450 than what you can get it for in say Cons Cameras €1495, this price includes the new Nikkor 18-70mm DX lens.

Anyway I am biased because I own a few Nikons and this is next on my shopping list, but it genuinely seems to be the market leader in consumer Digital SLRs for the moment anyway.

you can find more info here and lots more Nikon info here

dont buy any camera unseen if you're worried about build quality.

Furp is right though about the d70 its definitely feels much more solid than the 300d

its going for €1,375 in www.pixels.ie

I'm really looking forward to seeing the Minolta digital SLR. It's based on the Dynax 7 which is by no means an entry level camera so I doubt the digital 7 is going to compete with the EOS300D or the D70. It's probably going to compete more with the Olympus DSLR. The Minolta is going to be the first with built in anti-shake.

I'm confused! Why would anyone go for the Nikon for €1,375 approx when the Canon 10D can be got for €1.400?

Fair enough if you've got a bagfull of Nikon lenses but otherwise the 10D is way ahead in all the reviews I've read.

Yeah! And did you see what they are charging for the 10D. Jeez that's an incredible rip off.

And as for Conns Cameras. What an appropriate name  Over €1,900 when it can be got for €1,444 at NYCameras. What a country!

    Thanks Valentia,
but those images don't seem to be the best examples for colour definition/constrast. Also, I very much doubt that those are the full resolution of the images from the camera.

    S.

edit - sorry, just realised there's a link to the original file, but still would like to see something that's not all orange - the hardest colour for a computer screen to reproduce.

I'm very impressed by the full-scale image though :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,764 ✭✭✭Valentia

Have a look at the sites again :)

The full resolution images are there with no hokey pokey in photoshop. The "RAW" images are big and in jpeg format.
but those images don't seem to be the best examples for colour definition/constrast

You wont know that 'till you print them. I have printed some on the Epson 2100 at A3+ and they are stunning.

Have a look at the 10D examples on that site. Nearly the same but not with the built in sharpness that the 300d automatically applies. Not as well taken but a more realistic sample of non orangy stuff :)

where did you see the Canon 10D for €1.400?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 933 ✭✭✭Furp

Of course if you want really low prices you an order an "import" from the states although chances are you will be hit VAT, plus what the USA calls an import is the same as the models we get with a worldwide warranty, I have ordered lenses and flash's from http://www.bhphotovideo.com and they arrived quickly and where a lot cheaper than here even taking into account the Vat.

Also when i bought my Nikon F80 i got it from www.jessops.com in the UK, I got the camera +lens +the optional battery pack, all for around €620 and of course vat was included becasue it came from the UK, at the time the lowest price i could get here was over €700 for the Body only.

    B&H photo prices
    D70 with 18-70 lens $1299
    300D with 18-55 lens $929.95
    10D Body Only $1499

    Jessops prices
    D70 with 18-70 lens £999.90 (€1497)
    300D with 18-55 lens £849.90 (€1273)
    10D Body Only £1159 (€1736)

Having said all that it appears that since the last time i bought equip prices have equalized a lot more between regions,

Are getting better value in Ireland for photo equip after all?

    Here .

Don't let the New York bit fol you. The stuff is shipped from Germany.

This one on eBay looks really tempting especially as they say they will minimise the risk of duty.

Just thought I'd throw in my cents worth....

I shopped around for a Konica Minolta DiMAGE Z2 and found Warehouse Express in the UK. I notice that they are cheaper than Cam Ireland [279 GBP compared to 313.95 GBP].

They say on their site that they don't deliver to Ireland, but my order arrived within four days, no problems.

Highly interesting. I'd fly over and buy one off them if I hadn't just laid out all my cash & then some on new wheels. :(

If anyone is interested www.7dayshop.com have Canon Eos 300D currently on sale for £555 (body only). I recently received one from them without any problems but note that you get a Canadian version .ie. Digital Rebel, delivery takes about 2 weeks and as they are based in the Channel Islands there is a possibilty that you will be stung for tax and duty by post office. However I have ordered a lot from them and never had to pay any duty. Also free postage.
