The whole methol Cigarettes thing

firstly, does anyone know if the rumour about being able to smoke mentol cigarettes after the ban comes in is true? according to an article in the reputable source of information that is City Wide News, its only cigarettes etc with Nicottene that are going to be banned....

anyway, my point is, i saw that the People who manage cigarette machines in pubs (the Irish Cigarette Dispensery Association or something) have announced that after the ban they are going to stock these nicottene free mentol cigarettes...... I mean, how short sighted are they? Do they actually think they will sell anywhere near as well as regular cigarettes, it reminds me of the prohibition episode of The Simpsons with the Duff Exec.......
"we believe that our customers buy our cigarettes because they like to inhale fumes, not because of their nicotene content, I think new mentol B & H will be our most sucessful brand ever....."

How many smokers here would want to/be able to switch from normal cigs to ones that are nicotene free?? its like getting an alcho to drink Kaliber for the rest of his life.....

I also heard they are putting herbal ciggies (non-nicotene). To be fair to them what else are they gonna put in the machines, suppose they could put sweets in but not sure if they would sell though seeing as it's not a place for kids. Also I'd prefer to be breathing in nicottene and tar than these herbal cigarettes. They smell like wet socks. Also can you still buy Kaliber, haven't heard of that for years.

yeah, i suppose theyre not going to just give up, if they think they can still make money they might as well try... but the fact is that no-one, or very few people will use the mentol cigs, so theyll go bust, and then we wont have to put up with either wet socks or tar-laden smoke.......

Smoker-"its a herbal that I just bought from the machine a few minutes ago" [holds up packet of herbals...with 5 out of the twenty gone]

Barman-"oh ok, sorry mate" [while sweeping up at the end of the night, finds 5 unlit herbal ciggies on the floor]

i think you would be supprised about how many smokers would light up a herbal cigarette while having a pint. doesnt matter if there is nicotine in em or not. its not really about the nicotine. its about the habit and the way that having a smoke, any smoke, just goes hand in hand with drinking a pint. its all in the head!

I am a smoker and I have to say I would never ever smoke a herbal/menthol cigarette. They are disgusting! I would prefer to go out into the cold and have a real cigarette!

Menthol cigarettes have tar and nicotine in them, so I can't see why they wouldn't come under the ban.

Not entirely true! Take it from someone who has been off fags for over a year, nicotine is the most addicitive substance known to man! FACT! That said nicotine is completey out of system after 3 weeks after which time your only enemy is yourself. Once you realise that your an addict and this is a drug and that is the only thing it is.


As for herbal cigarettes, there horrible and pointless! The only reason anyone smokes is because there addicited, I don't care what reason they tell you. Anyone here who remembers there first cigarette will remember it tasted rank but you still smoke more probably for status reasons initially but you get used to the taste and soon your body get used to the nicotine.

AFAIK "herbal" cigarettes do not contain tobacco, while menthol cigarettes are ordinary tobacco with added flavourings.
If the legislation refers to tobacco then herbal cigarettes would be ok, while anything containing tobacco like pipes, cigars, menthol cigs etc would not be.
I do remember a piece on RTE news a while back about the vending machine operators saying they will be stocking non-tobacco herbal cigarettes
