Rowing Machines

    Hi all,

I have decided to try to get fit.

Could anybody recommend a reasonably priced rowing machine for me to buy.

There is a Carl Lewis model in the Argos catalogue for about €320 ... does anybody know if they are any good?

There is plenty of choice around on the internet - but some of them are very pricey - Concept 2 is generally accepted to be the best but £1000 (sterling) is way out of my league for something I could be fed up with in a couple of months time.

    Any opinions/advice would be welcome.

Have you considered a gym? Buying equipment for home use always seems like a good idea, but inevitably through boredom or lack of routine or both it eventually ends up being underused. As well as that, joining a gym gives you the opportunity of a personalised programme, with a range of activities (not just rowing), weights, etc. For the prices you are talking, you could easily get an annual subscription to a gym instead.

    Thanks for the reply,

I have ruled out joining a gym. I have wasted too much money joining gyms and not using them in the past ... I have a young family now and cannot get to the gym with any regularity.

I'm really looking at this from the health point of view rather than wanting to get superfit or turn myself into a body builder.

The only exercise I'm getting now is the odd walk in the evening when things are quiet - I did a lot of running in the past but my knees are gone at this stage and running is a pure slog.

I enjoy the walking as much as I enjoyed the running but I find that it's not strenuous enough for me to "feel" like I'm getting fit.

    bye for now !!

Just a thought: given that there are potentially many rowing machines lying idle around the country, have you looked in to Buy and Sell? I did a brief search on 'rowing' on their website and it threw up 12-15 ads (under 'Gym Equipment'). Some of these are bound to be useless (I am guessing the €20 one falls into that category), but some might be good. If you get more advice here as to what is 'good' and 'bad' new, then you might be able to pick up a bargain. Likewise, e-bay.

    Good Luck!
