Might not be the correct place to post this but just wondering does anyone know where or how much it is to begin flying lessons? What is needed for a licence etc?

Was in a taxi the other day and we were talking about this.
I was fairly drunk so can't say this will be too accurate but apparently its very very expensive. 2-300 quid per 30mins and a few grand for the licence itself.

Tho this could very easily be wrong. Taxi guy might not have had a clue or maybe im remembering figures wrong. I was quite drunk so take the above with a pinch of salt.

I heartily endorse Calibos "Google is your friend"

    A great resource is pprune.org

But to give you the gist expect to be out 4-5 grand for your PPL (Private Pilots Licence) and over 10 times that if you're thinking career (yes thats €50,000+ for your commercial and thats on the *very* conservative side)

My girlfriends cousin left school about 4 years ago and wanted to become a pilot. His father paid for him to go to the uk to obtain his commercial pilots licence. It took him a year with most of the flying taking place in Spain. This is due to the weather which (of course) is better in Spain so you have more chance of flying hours. Took him approx 1 year full time and cost about £30,000stg I think. However he has yet to take up a job as a pilot and thats 4 years later. He finished just as Air Lingus and other laid of pilots.

I've had a few lessons in the Weston Aerodrome in Leixlip. It's about e75 for a half hour lesson (although with take off and landing and everything you're usually up for about 45 mins). You need to have 10 hours flying time for you're students flying liscence (doesn't really mean anything, its just so you can say, "oh I've a students flying liscence"), which you get after you're first solo flight (also after about 10 hours). You need 45 hours altogether to get a PPL, of which I think 5 must be instrument rating (flying with instruments only - no windscreen!), and 5 must be night time flying. When you have a PPL you can legally fly other ppl around, but you can't profit from it. I'd recommend flying lessons to anyone though, its a brilliant feeling, and its totally different to being in a big plane. Slightly more dangerous, but so much more fun! It's really easy to pick up too. (I did the take off and landing on my 6th lesson)

Yeah, the disaster training is an experience in itself. Maybe disaster training is the wrong phrase... more like training for if something fails, like an engine for example. Needless to say; brown pants time :D

I'm interested in learning how to fly a plane, but I don't need to be able to take off or land.

Does anyone know any schools that teach how to fly large planes, like jumbo jets?

    Cheers.

I think I saw an add for a school like this. They sold teatowels and cutlery too. Strange mix of stuff really. Oh well.

posted this in reply to your other post...

been looking at that myself. is a bit pricey depending how quick u want to get it done.
the national flight center offer the private pilots licence from weston airport (in leixlip i think).

You need 45 hours of flight minimum @ €145 per hour which is the bulk of the cost.
There's also the ground classes and materials etc.. but they're not too expensive.

If your down cork way its a bit cheaper €110 euro (save at least €1500).
    Check out http://www.southaer.com/

    Anyone know any cheaper locations???

I've attached the info from the national flight center for any interested ppl. (and no i don't work for them)
