The tricross is fantastic, I flew in to work today. Should have upgraded years ago, she is made for commuting. Got it in cycleways, even the shoppies there were drooling. Only downside is she is so light and sexy I have to start getting paranoid about security.

ye the spacers will work as long as they preload the fork/headset.

id bring it to your LCB and get them to cut it...up to yourself if you like it like that it leave it, if it was me it would drive me mad:D

I've been planning a build for quite a while now, and finally the frame is here, just waiting on the rest of the parts.

Lugged steel frame from Mercian in Derby, to be built up as a comfy, fast Audax-esque machine. Maybe two, three weeks until she's roadworthy!



Having this frame sitting next to me on the floor of my bedroom has made for a frustrating fortnight...

Mercian's are worth alot of money. If you don't want to build it up, sell it on eBay.

It's the Strada Speciale in Reynolds 725 steel. Something about a lugged frame, it's hard to put my finger on... thought about getting fancy-dan lugs and chrome this-and-that, but decided this was the way to go.

i did say i'd post images of my bikes here some day so... in the blue is my training bike - Giant OCR3, which i've upgraded to Ultegra with Mavic Aksium Wheelset. i bought this second hand last May. and in the red is my racing bike, i've had this since November last and serves me well in my first season as S3 rider, no complaints - Specialized Tarmac Expert Ultegra.

Oh alright then, I have been holding off on posting these up but since I have some crappy pics taken with the iphone here we go...


Training bike (2000 Model Trek OCLV Carbon, Dura Ace 9spd) - Sometimes throw a set of Cosmics on this and race it, don't ask. I just seem to be better on this. These old treks were great, not as flash as the newer ones but very light and a great feel to them.




PedalForce QS2, Dura Ace 9spd, Kysrium SL's. This is now a spare, which I am half thinking of selling. When fully built up with all my light bits it was 14lbs flat. Now its about 15.5. A tiny bit too big for me though, but still comfortable and served me well in the etape a couple of years back.





This is a 2008 Cervelo R3 SL with Dura Ace 10. Currently finding it murder, getting dropped in races and training sessions that I had been comfortable in previously. Just not used to the sizing on it yet get all sorts of aches and strains so it will be a while, but when it clicks, it will be a flier, I have hammered it up a couple of extremely sharp hills standing up where the sizing does not matter so much and it really responds well, that famed bottom end stiffness really comes to the fore.




And this is my cheapo mountain bike used if I fancy getting a little bit mucky in the off season.

are you finding the R3 uber stiff? very good for the sprints? It seems like everyone in our local club is buying them. No one has a black one though which in my opinion is the best looking one

The white R3 is the standard frame. I wanted the 2007 version which was black and red. My LBS could not source one and I didn't fancy a white bike so I paid a little extra to get the R3 SL which is lighter but crucially still black (mine measured 776g !).

Apparently they are stiff but compliant, which means nothing in itself as all carbon bike frame manufacturers say that. I would say that a combination of the small size (51 cm - I usually take a 54 in a trek), and the huge bottom end does make it super stiff, you can really feel it especially when standing up. You do feel your power driving straight to the cranks, it is particularly noticeable over the Pedalforce.

You feel it the most when you are out of the saddle, although it is so light at the back that it tends to hop around on a bumpy surface if you hammer it out of the saddle.... takes a little getting used to. Sitting down apparently its comfortable across rough surfaces and is used in the Paris Roubaix. Its certainly softer than any aluminium bike I have been on. But overall, I would say that it is a much harsher ride than either of my other bikes. I did buy it for racing though so thats ok !

a guy in the club with me has the white bike and you literally have to clean it every time he uses it, even the orange powerbar drink stains the frame, the others who have R3's all have the black and red one

Is the SL version lighter??

Yeah thats why I didn't want white. Couldn't be bothered with all the cleaning ! The SL is lighter, usually about 90-100grams lighter. Its the one Sastre uses on the mountain stages of the tour. Its an insane weight really, even the standard R3 is only about 860g.

Fab bikes Quigs. Really like the look of the Pedalforce. I think Armstrong rode that Trek frame in 99 Tour.By the way what saddle do you use?

Hi Sy,

The trek is indeed identical to the bike Armstrong won the 1999 tour on. They painted it US Postal colors in celebration and made it available to the general public a couple of months later. Good enough for lance good enough for me ! They are a seriously nice bike to ride, I have ridden later models in the same size but I kept coming back that that one.

The pedalforce is a great bike for long distances, really comfortable and surprising light. I was going to flog it as seen in that pic for 850 euro, but I keep backing out... on one hand I like the bike and don't need the cash right now, on the other I don't have space... Decisions, decisions.

I use the Selle Italia SLR on all bikes. The Pedalforce has the more recent model SLR XP (180g), the Trek has an older model SLR XP (165g) whilst the Cervelo has the standard SLR (135g). Its amazing how much more comfortable the XP models are with just a few extra grams of padding ! The important thing however is that they all have the same shape so I can swap bikes around at will without tearing the backside out of myself.

This is the first road bike I've owned: a Ridley Triton S I bought second-hand last year. The frame is aluminium but the fork is carbon. The groupset is Campagnolo Xenon, the wheels FSA RD80 and lots of other components are FSA too. It's entry level all the way but I find it great so far.



And this is my commuting workhorse. It's a singlespeed made out of an old Dawes steel frame I had powdercoated chocolate brown. The wheels are Mavic Open Sport with System Ex tracks hubs and Armadillo tyres.

Bog standard Trek 1000, will be getting the wheels form the Look soon as i will be getting a new pair of Kysrium SL's for that
