Shortlived Marvel Comic?

Descption : Basically Galactus (the giant purple armoured character) had gathered up all the various SuperHeroes and SuperVillans and whisked them off to outer space. He placed them on two football-pitch-sized floating arenas (goodies in one and baddies in the other) and got them to fight with each other. The goodies were lead (jointly I think?) by Spidey and Captain America and the baddies were led by Dr.Doom.

If it helps I think there was even an action-figure spin-off range based on this comic including (if my memory serves me?) Iron man.

Anyone know the exact title of this comic series?

I think Secret Wars is the one your thinking of, took place mainly in the different Spiderman comics, I have all but 2 from the series in the attic somewhere.

It was a guy called the Beyonder that whisked them away to another planet to fight it out. ran for 12 issues itself, with various lead ins from the other comics. It's availble as a trade paperback at the moment.

You may be happy to know that Brian Michael Bendis (he of Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimate Spider-man, Ultimate X-Men, Daredevil, Alias and Powers fame - one of the best comic writers is yonks) is planning a 5 part Secret Wars series due to launch in a month or two. Should be good!

Yeah it wasn't a short lived comic - it was designed as a 12 issue mini series. The same as most around that time. These days they opt more for the 4-6 issue mini series. I don't think they're getting the go ahead these days for the 12 issue runs.
