Don't know if this is the correct board for this question or not. Apologies if I've got it wrong.

For the past couple of years I have seen this building standing isolated in a field about a mile or two on the Abbeyleix side of Stradbally.

I'm totally fascinated to see a building that looks about 15 feet square at the base with a dome on top that is like what one would expect to see in Moscow or perhaps the middle east but not Stradbally.

    Can anyone enlighten me please?

Judging by the size and location, the shape of the door and such I would say stable, or shed of some sort. As for the dome on the roof it appears to be totaly ornamental and is defo an influence of muslim architecture, more than likely it is an attempt at a fancy design in order to hide a ventilation ope.

Is there nobody from the midlands on Boards that knows what it is?
Don't think the dome is just decorative and I suspect the building is of religious significance

    Thanks Newgrange.

You'd be amazed how many people I have asked and nobody seemed to know.

Yeah, tis a folly - landlords used to have them built just for the hell of it!

Funny, was just talking about follies the other day - there's one by the road from Ennis to Limerick near Bunratty and I'd never known what it was before then.

Did you even look at the link newgrange provided? It is an Orthodox church, their believers probably don't consider it a folly. Personally I think all religious structures are pointless follies but that is a different discussion.

But it's so much more fun just making it up as you go along and making everyone think you're an expert!
