The World Rally Championship’s leading players have put together proposals to limit the costs involved in building and running the latest generation of World Rally Cars.

The FIA Technical Working Group, the sport’s rules legislative, met yesterday (Wednesday) to hear their proposals and discuss the direction to be taken regarding some of technical regulations currently enforced in rallying.

Changes to key parts of the car, such as engines and turbochargers, are due to be restricted. Teams currently enjoy free reign on such items between seasons, but the TWG thinks that these parts ought to be designed to last longer than just one season, thereby reducing costs. Units such as gearboxes – one of the most fallible parts on any rally car – must last longer than one rally. A system of sealing would ensure that units were not repaired or altered between rallies.

A cut-down on the number of consumables each team took to an event would also contribute to major cost savings. Teams would be able to fly all their equipment to events, rather than send them by road (in Europe). This would mean the calendar could be more easily organised.

Any changes in technical regulations would have to be married to any changes in the format of an event. Senior rallying officials are in favour of splitting a rally into three separate days, with out-of-action cars allowed to return to the competition on the following day, subject to them being successfully repaired. Whether cars with blown engines and/or turbos would be allowed to rejoin under the proposed ‘units must last longer than one rally’ rule remains to be seen.

any thoughts? (i'm sick of only seeing f1 news here :D )

Interesting .... but why do this now when they could have cut costs before the start of the season..like not introducing extra rallies  .....

On a lighter note.. there will be an Irishman driving in the WRC next weekend here
