Why do some people sign their name, or even more boggling, their handle at the bottom of all of there posts? This is something I've noticed a few people do, and I really can't understand it tbh. We already know who's posting, we can see your handle just to the left ffs. Even worse is Joepc. I'm sorry, but saying thanks to yourself at the end of all of your posts is presumptious and pretentious. Make me understand why you do this, please!

Hmm, i see your point, i usually only sign after a particularily long/meaningful/ranty post. i dont think its that annoying tbh.

    But thats just me

Yep, I've always thought it to be idiotic.
Even worse are the morons who not only sign the bottom of their posts, but also have their nick in their facking sig

Hmmm, name in sig is annoying, to be fair some ppl dont just put the nick ie Trojan signing with Al, me (to a lesser extent) signing with Raph

What I've always wondered about message boards in general is why do people use nicknames instead of their real names to post something? Obviously I'm guilty of it too (but only cos everyone else started the trend ;) ) Serious question though. What's the reasoning behind it? Where did it come from?

In case DeV turns out to be a 40 year old brazilian paedo named Carl

    Mainly habit.

And I *really* don't like sigs (dunno if that's relevant).

And back in the day when everyone knew everyone first names were used. When we're in the pub we don't scream down the bar "Hey, DeathGiver2003, was that a green Aftershock or a pink one?" :)

    --

Why use 'em? I'm guessing (but it's likely accurate) that it's originally from 2 roots - to a lesser extent D&D (yes the game), and a greater extent, older computer systems username requirements. They may have been limited to 6 - 8 characters, people wouldn't use their full name, or found that it was already used, or they were in charge of the machine and could be "God" if they liked.

i typically put it at the end of posts where i may have said something deep and meaningful instead of my usual crap, then i feel i should sign off with my handle, if i got info of someone or an informal reply i may use "cheers", if its more formal you may get "regards" out of me and i don't even use my full handle what you make of that eh?

    data

    Thanks for your useful input.

I think having the Motto of the Roman Legions at the end of ones post is stupid. Now aren't you the silly one?

(No, it was rhetorical, I don't *actually* give a damn, please don't start a stupid flamewar).

I sign it with my real name. Wanted to change my nick to something John like, but I couldn't let the Lump Die.

What seems to be more sad is people now putting their system specs in their sig. Are we supposed to be in awe that some nerd is declaring to the community that he had a 123947192837GB hard drive and a billion mbs of RAM. Oooooh! Get a life in fairness.

yeah i never put my system specs on board until recently usually do it on dedicated technology boards and what not, but after seeing a recent surge of it from the fairly regular posters on the technology i decided to lash mine in, it was time for a sig change anyway

raphael great minds think alike etc. etc. we rock in general

ok, there's 1 respect i differ from dataisgod, my sig is in fact the name of my band, and a useful disclaimer

    'very' useful disclaimer...

i think the name signing gives a certain personality to the posts. Like how data and raph only put it at the end of something deep or important. Its a statement and older members put it at the end of the posts to state themselves.

uhmm how do i explain that. Its like how Dev always = wraith of admin god. while john = cheeky little bast*rd (well it does for me) and with other members its similer when i see the sig or the name at the end i remember other posts by them and think ahh this guys always messin around or dont say something outlandish or he'll start a flamewar.

I see how it seems stupid with the name being just there at the side. But seeing it at the end kinda says it was a defitnite article by the member. (also with so many members with similer pics etc it makes the person stand out a tiny bit more.)

i know its in the end its useless but its character traits. and doesnt that make people unique (or in a 'certain' group when its common sigs like comp specs)

    well thats my rant

    tata...

its used in the tech board, eg
This new app wont work on my PC etc.
No need to post your specs, cause its in your sig, rather useful actually, and is common place in most tech forums

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,714 ✭✭✭Ryaner

The pc sig's are for the tech boards and board does have them. I agree it is kinda annoying at times but for those who are interested it's handy and all.

    *mr_angry switches to "geek-researcher" mode.

You have unwittingly subjected yourself to a naming convention based around the concept of "trust". If you'd like to read more of it yourself, I suggest "Leonardo's Laptop", Chapter 5, by Ben Shneidermann, available from MIT Press, or an excerpt here.

Basically, we're at level 5 in Shneidermann's table - anonymous. This is because we don't trust each other, and we're afraid that DEATHGIVER2003 is going to stalk us all, and then murder us all horribly in our beds if we use our real names. Or just send us lots and lots of mails from the Reader's Digest Grand Prize Draw.

    Trust no-one!

Thanks for the explanation folks. Obviously it did annoy me a small bit before, and with short one or two line posts it will continue to do so, but I can see its point now =0)
