losing weight

    hello, im a girl, 5'11, 68 kilos. whats a good weight to be. ive taken up pilates and running in the evenings to help me along. everytime i lose a kilo, i have no idea whether its a big deal or not. i used to be up to 73 kilos.
    will running for approx 30 minutes every other day make much of a difference with regards losing weight??

    Your BMI (Body Mass Index) works out at 20.9

    Ideally, your BMI should be between 20 - 25, so it looks like you are just fine.

    Your "ideal" weight would be about 68 - 70 kg.

    You are obviously pretty tall, so you have to expect that your weight might be a little higher than other girls you know, but from the info you have given, you certainly don't need to lose any more weight. In fact, losing much more than a kilo or two might not be a good idea at all.

    You may still want to tone up a bit though, so running and pilates can certainly help you here. By tone up I mean basically trade fat for muscle, so your weight may not change much, but you will carry less fat, and have better muscle tone.

    Well done Silent Grape, and like rs says you are more or less 'at the right weight'. You may not feel that way (you wouldn't have aske if you were?), so take rs advice and tone up. You might also consider small weights (ask at the gym about this, but be specific about what you want and seek out a senior instructor to help you). The most important thing for you now is not losing any more weight, but maintaining the ligestyle changes you have made to keep it off / tone up.

    that's good going silent grape. I'm losing weight myself at the moment and I'm down from 75 to 69 right now and going. It's great to see it coming off when you know it's completely unncessary weight.

    Every time you lose a kilo, think of a bag of sugar. That's how much you've lost. It's not insignificant, so be very pleased. In volume, it's about roughly a pint of water.

    Pilates is great for strengthing core muscles as you undoubtedly now, but like the previous poster said, try out free weights at your gym. If you lift some weights as part of your exercise regime, the benefits can be tremendous, not the least stronger bones as a protection against osteoporosis. Have a look at books like "Women's Strength Training Anatomy" by Delavier (I think) for inspiration on what you can do.

    thanks a million for the replies everyone. i am very much reassured about my weight.
    i dont think id go any lower than 65 kilos after reading all that information u gave me. its good to know im an 'ideal' weight, even if i dont quite look it :)

    Try not to fixate too much on your weight, just look at yourself and see what do you like? Is anything a bit jiggly/flabby? Well then you need to tone up some and get fit for health reasons.
    As you increase training to tone, ignore your weight, it will fluxuate and many not go down as your muscle level increases.
