Hey there, have just signed up for it but can't find where the hotspots are in Dublin :-( Is there a listing anywhere? Also, what will I have to do to set it up on my lappy? I have an 802.11b card, will this be enough?

    Thanx

I don't think it's a definitive list though, as the hotel nearby has it, and it's not listed on the site.

    To surf in these place?
To be honest I don't know but according to their website it doesn't seem to be difficult (assuming you got Wifi up and running already!).
Subscribe to BT Openzone or purchase a pre-pay pass

Get a wireless LAN card or wireless LAN enabled laptop or PDA

Visit your nearest BT Openzone hotspot

Open your web browser and go to http://www.btopenzone.com

    Enter your username and password

Access the internet, your e-mail or your corporate intranet.

Log off when you are finished

I guess if it's free for one week, you don't need a pre-paid pass...

Seems to be one in the Imperial Hotel in Cork.. Might take a stroll in there some day this week with my laptop and see what all the bru-ha-ha is about.

It's simple. Just open your laptop and it'll find the network. Open your browser and it'll bring you to the openzone homepage and you can sign up for the free trial there, and it'll email you a username and password. That's it.
Was using it in belfast on wednesday, it's pretty sweet.

what kind of speed do u get?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,846 ✭✭✭✭eth0_

It seems to be limited to 100kb/sec per person. I was getting 60k/sec on bit torrent.

yup - Airport is great :)

but some of those Windows laptop users aren't so lucky - have seen several scratching heads wondering what they are supposed to do - mainly because they don't know how to scan for Access Points or where that feature might be hidden on their machine if it doesn't auto scan...

have seen (in the US hotspots i've used) those folded cards left on the tables or a leaflet at the counter with the basic instructions e.g. what the SSID is, leaving WEP off etc... didn't see any of those in insomnia grafton st., just a small poster on the wall (and only noticed that on the way out)
