    Last in the series of bog issues...

    CCTV cameras in toilets! I'd never thought I'd see the day, but Arnotts (way upstairs) have a camera just over the urinals lookin over the sinks. I was quite shocked tbh. Anywhere else have them?

    It is what it's.

    I thought that was illegal

    I also thought it was illegal. It's a privacy issue: it's why people always use the bathrooms in movies and TV to talk about illegal dealings.

    of course the other side of the coin is that they are in the womens jacks too

    maybe they can crack the secret of why birds go for a piss in groups of 3 and disappear for 20 minutes

    Is it not illegal for the reason of.... pedofillia? [Sp there?]

    It would be illegal to film a minor [or Adult without concent i suppose] while urinating... whould it not. Surly the store in question are not producing illegal porn to support thir growing expensive in the international drug trade?

    If they are just looking at the sinks then I suppose it's ok, as long as you don't piss in the sink.

    Remember those fellas in Supermacs who pretended to slip on the floor after they threw water onto it, and tried to sue them?

    Just to clarify, it's pointed as such:
     _         #######################
    |_         ##    ## SINKS ##    ##
    |_
    CAM->
    |_
             |
             |        |         |        |
             |  CUB   |   ICL   |   ES   |
             |        |         |        |
             -----------------------------

    So it's not getting you urinating unless, of course what Tommy said

    It is what it's.

    defo there for the people who used to piss in the sink

    It more than likely for insurance clain reasons with te added bonus oc fatching any drug or voilent crimes.

    I remember one incedent when a Supermac's branch in Galway City (Cross Street afair) put CCTV in the bathrooms and managed to avoid a big payout when they filmed a woman deliberately wettng the floor (with tap water) and then feigning a fall and injury.

    You are entiled to privacy in places where you expect it - toilets, changing rooms, bedrooms, private property, etc. However, the placing of the camera does not seem to impinge on that right.

    However there was a ruling in I think Washington State that said "up skirt" camera shots were legal once they were done in public.

    actually i vaguely remember my mother telling me a few months back that the son of someone she works with was attacked by someone in the bathrooms there?

    i don't have any details on it so it can't be taken as the certain reason but i definately imagine theres some kind of connection between said incident and them installing cameras

    The Ulsterbus Terminal (Foyle Street) in Derry has the cameras looking down the urinals towards the door thusly:
     _    _____________________
     |Door|< Urinals>  <-CAM  ]
                              ]
                              ]

    Most of the public/restaurant toilets I've been in in Dublin seem to have cameras, as well as just about every shopping centre I've been in, in Derry, Dublin or Letterkenny.

    well it means we don't have to go far when we wash our hands

    They also have black lights - I think it's there for drugs really. ...but I'm sure fradulent claims were gladly covered.

    It's a bit much claiming an invasion of privicy - especally when you think about how we gladly wave that right when we want to pee in public.

    fook, i thought i hid my cameras well. i better take them out again before the store security spot them too

    As Victor said it comes down to an expectation of privacy.
    You aren't allowed to photo people on private property if that property is normally hidden from public view.

    But so long as the CCTV camera in the jacks was obvious then I'd *assume* it would be OK - surely there would be no expectation of privacy if there's a bloddy great big camera pointing at you.

    Its obviously to stop any dodgy goings on eg junkys banging up or robbing people.

    I'd doubt they're overly concerned about people pissing in the sink. Its not as it the people who paid for the cameras are actually going to have to clean the sink themselves. some poor bastard imigrant probably cleans em whether or not they have piss in them.

    Again - with the privacy issue - these cameras can be used in providing evidence if a crime occurs.

    I remember a couple of guys in Supermacs made a claim for falling on a wet floor in the toilets. But they were stung badly bacause there was a camera which recorded them throwing water on the ground and slipping on it (think he even did it twice for good measure!)

    Might be wrong though
