Picture phone girl. A scam/prank.

Do you guys agree with me? No girl identified. No age of the girl. More rumours going around than you can shake a stick at. Alternating stories. A emotional appeal from annoymous Dad on national radio, telling us not to send it on, only drawing more attention. But here's the best one. A school jumper which no one can identify, surely there aren't that many school jumpers in Cork.

I bet it was a pic of an 18+ girl who mightn't even be from Ireland, posing, knowing full well that the pic was going to be distributed. I think the most reasonable possibility, is that some weirdo was surfing the web for prono and came across some obsure pics of a girl wearing what looked like a school jumper. He transferred it to his phone with a date-cable, and came up with a stupid story about some guy sending the pic to get revenge on his gf who cheated on him, and then sent it to a few of his mate for a kick.

And the whole thing got WAY WAY out of hand. If it is a prank, and it's a legal pic, I bet the guys who started it are delighted with how well the prank went, outcries on radio/newspapers, garda envolvment, etc. etc. Altough he's still scewed if he gets caught.

Hard to know if it's a prank,if it is it's some hell of a prank. But that still does'nt make it right

    Reminder:
Even if the picture was of an 18 year old it may depict someone younger and the law kicks in.

OK, first off, I haven't seen the picture yet I have a camera phone. Guess I don't know the sort of people that are forwarding it around the place.

My main reason for posting is that I read in the newspaper today about an Irish company 'Telcotec', that have developed technology to block 'unsuitable' images being sent to mobile phones. The technology does this by 'image analysis and special filtering methods'.

Now call me crazy but I don't like the idea of my MMS being censored. What will happen to pictures you want to send, of say yourself in a bathing suit on a beach to a friend, or something like a drunk friend mooning? Will they show too much skin for this technology to allow it through? I know it's not every day that you'll be on beach or whatever, but what about grown adults' right to send pictures to each other. I'm not saying that this picture is acceptable, again I haven't seen it, but the effect it may have in the future seems heavy-handed.

Fair enough if it's a case of parents needing to sign their childrens' numbers up to a particular service in order to get 'suspect' MMS blocked; the article doesn't mention how the technology will be implemented. The company is trying to sell it to major phone operators in Ireland and the UK, which means most people here will be affected by this, if it is adopted. I realise the fuss this picture has caused and all the rest, but I don't like the idea of censorship in any arena, unless it's going to be a voluntary decision on behalf of parents/guardians of minors.

Just my opinion, and just in case it seems too off-topic, the newspaper wouldn't be running this article were it not for that picture floating around of this girl.

Would this not be total invasion of privacy as thet would see everything you send?????

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,441 ✭✭✭✭jesus_thats_gre

Ok. The body in the picture is not the body of the head in the picture. It has been edited. From what I heard, the girls head belongs to a less sexy body.

It's def not superimposed! You would be able to tell the difference in the pixels anyways. It's definetly been blown out of proportion and it's only making things worse for the girl. Plus the photo quality is ****e so you only get the suggestion

Does anyone else here think it's being blown out of proportion

Of course it is. Ireland's a boring little country with nothing better to talk about it.

Yawn - the law also covers generated images -eg: if the Court decides that it is intended to depict a minor ...

Actually the girl really exists. She is from Blackrock and in 6th year. I know a girl who goes to that school and she was telling me about her.

sci0x a mate of mine in holy faith said she was in 3rd year of their school too and they had been questioning the wrong girl in Cork too. Looks like everyone thats slightly resembles her is in for it on this one

Hey how odd then is this: Monday night's episode of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit dealt with this topic of making fake child porn. It's semi-legal in the US after a court ruling...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,105 ✭✭✭Tommy Vercetti

I think that the law is quite odd. By that logic, shouldn't a movie depicting a murder, for example, be banned? If someone who is blatantly 60 years old dons a school uniform, is that illegal? Bizarre.

on the topic of monitoring images and gauging their content, that ability is still some way off, teh technoogy and algorithms don't exist yet. Witness the hotmail sign up protocol as evidence.

What really pisses me off is all the ignorant fúcking arseholes that are trying to blame this on the technology/mobile operators. Anyone who saw the gimps on prime time discussing this the other night should understand. They had some muppet from an association of principals and vice-principals (or something to that effect) whining about how he'd like picture messages to be censored, and bitching at an O2 representative about how the nasty evil mobile operators aren't doing anything to stop teenage fúckwits sending porn to each other. As if that's their responsibility, they just provide a service, they can't be liable for what their customers do. That censorship idea would be the same as asking the government to open and read all our mail before it is delivered, after all what's to stop someone sending porn by post?

.. as lethal injection, firing squad, gassing, hanging etc.

Next time you are in the west of Ireland you may notice there is a lot of salty water near the beachs. Strangely enough things are a little differend on the other side of it...

In any case its the fault of the fecking eejit who started it-even if it is real which i still severly doubt-everyone in ireland seems to know this girl at this stage its beyond ridiculous.

This isn't way off at all. My classmate is doing an image processing project for his final year in which his program determines whether an image is a cityscape or a landscape.
This is done by checking for pixels of the same colour which run in continuous straight lines. He has a 98% success rate out of 50 images so far.
To adapt this for different types of images would just require you to search for a different orientation of pixels (though it would be way more complex)
The program doesn't 'see' the image much like the antenae doesn't 'read' the message.

    Edit: Linky!

How can they do that, they have no right to search threw your belonging's

don't know tbh they must of let em though, i don't know though maybe he's exaggerating, waffling or what not but thats what he said anyway

A school has absolutely NO RIGHT to search through your phone like that. If that happened me i'd be taking legal action.
Are you sure it wasn't that the school had banned cam phones and then suspended kids who still came to school with them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,174 ✭✭✭✭kmart6

Well if they tryed to look threw my phone,I'd do them for invasion of privacy. In my school a couple of friends have had there phone takin off them and I have heard teachers going around talking about what is on it!

    ban camera phones.

    plain and simple.

this was bound to happen sooner or later.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,403 ✭✭✭passive

    ban camera phones.

    uh....why exactly?

someone took an indecent picture and it got spread around therefore ban camera phones?
so...the internet has to go too, right?
and some pretty disgusting texts can be sent by underage..should we just forget the whole phone thing?

the media must have been having a very slow day and they've made things a lot worse for the girl (i don't think its a hoax, saw the pic before hearing any of the crap around it and it seemed real enough..all the stories behind it are crap though)

Good idea! Also: Ban this website! There are lurid thoughts on it and occassionally links to sites that spread evil thoughts!
Ban all mobiles - they have many means to spread nefarious thoughts.
In fact ban all forms of communication as they too can spread the evil all around us.
Let's live inside boxes. It's safest that way!

no it was definetly related to the pictures the kids won't have handed over there phones if they knew they where banned to be looked at. i'll try to get the full details but i'm not in work again til next saturday so.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,676 ✭✭✭Gavin

Just by the by. I'm surprised more people aren't aware of it, but mobile phone operators have no issue with viewing picture/text messages... It's not a problem for them to do it, and if you send images of a personal nature over the phone to whomever, more the fool you.
