it's a coolness rating...4 silver stars recognises the coolest of the cool.

it changes with your post count at 100 it will change and again at 500 i think, and 1000

actually silver stars denote a moderator, not any specific number

afaik, subscribed members who pay, can change the colour of the stars and put a custom title under their names

the rating system is explained here
