I happened to catch afew seconds of 'the bleeping Osbournes' on MTV, and as the titles suggests the curses are bleeped and blocked etc.. which is understandable, however, they also blur out people drinking alcohol....!!!
its really stupid, because you can see the glass or whatever, and whats in it, then you see them raise it to their mouths, and just as it touches their lips they blur it out.... its not like you dont know what it is or anything.

I doubt there is a law or anything either, given that daytime shows (such as repeats of something like eastenders or the bill) show alcohol consumption.

This kind of P.C. behaviour pisses me off something else.

MTV had a Top 10 of the most controversial moments in music. #1 was the launch of MTV - how I fcuking laughed. MTV is the most conservative station I know of - your example proves my point. Whilst the UK & Ireland version isn't so bad, the US one is atrocious - the bleeping Osbournes is all they EVER get. I mean imagine the poor little kids heard a swear - and then they can see bodies dissected over on C.S.I. Unbelievable. Their puritantical righteousness makes me sick - The Dreamers just got an NC-17 rating for having sex and nudity yet it's perfectly acceptable to let kids in to see the far more morally dubious slaughtering of people in tripe like "Jeepers Creepers 2". With this kind of lazy thinking, it's no wonder the world is askew.

I hate that. Violence and gore is considered more acceptable than nudity and bad language. "It's not okay for kids to see the human body as a beautiful thing, they can only see it in its gutted form. Not allowed see skin, only what's above or under the skin".

yeah, nudity is a big deal, i can kinda understand racy sex-scenes being censored pre-watershed, but nudity is and should not be seen as vulgar. I mean, viewing explicit sex before its understood can damage a child, but they see the body every day, their own and that of their families

Indeed - it's insanely ridiculous and seems some sort of leftover from Victorian puritan days. Our European partners, and other places such as South America, don't have the same attitude of shame to sex (e.g. "Y Tu Mama Tambien") or nudity. I'd love to see a defence as to why sex and the body - part of everyone's life and a good part - is considered evil whereas violence - a somewhat less natural element of life - is considered fine to show.

a mate of mine said, "you are allowed to show anything being stuck into a person on TV, a knife, a scalpel, anything, as long as it isn't a mickey!" (whitch, lets be honest is perfectly normal human behaviour)

MTV,during the day at least,is nearly as conservative as the christiaj satellite channels, and it seems American MTV always is. This is weird,as IIRC while US free terrestrial tv is strictly controlled re swearing, nudity and violence cable chanels can show nearly anything they want,at least post watershed anyway. Thats why while few shows from Fox or NBC etc have much swearing HBO shows like Sopranos and Oz can show sex and swearing with near impunity. So I cant see why MTV doesnt take advantage.
The ironic thing is that when they blur a bottle you take more notice of it than when they dont. They even edit out booze bottles from the occasional music video, but let them stay unblurred in others. For example in the California Love remix video(the one where theyre at the house party, not the Mad Max style one )they blur out a bottle of something being poured on the ground. But videos by pop style eejits like Camron show bottles of cristal with abandon. Why? Do they think that if kids see Tupac pour a cheap bottle 40 ounce of beer that kids will drink the stuff, whereas cristal is out of the reach of your average 15 year old? MTV are fcuking wankspanners.

kinda reminds me of the South Park movie when Kyles mother didnt mind people being killed as long as they didnt have a "potty mouth"

The UK have regulations prohibiting an erect penis from being seen on screen. I was watching a perfectly normal show on the bbc when they mentioned this.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 10,247 Mod ✭✭✭✭flogen

yeah, c4 showed an erect penis, but it was at about 12 and was for medical reasons only...

I remember when i used to get tv5, id get home from school early on a wednsday and theyd have a movie on at 2 that always had nudity, and often sex scenes (which werent explict, but probably more so than post watershed scenes here). Naturally at the age of 14 I found this amazing (and educational), but It was never vulgar or uncomforting like alot of TV violence can be..... quite the opposite actually:D

so we aren't allowed to see erect penises on TV.

seems weird considering that half the population either have a penis which they can (very) happily make erect, or even for those without, I'm sure that even the majority of people who don't have a penis (erect or otherwise) at least have access to one, or have seen one before.

personally I'm not a huge fan of them myself, (aside from the one I own of course) but it is the biggest hypocracy to not allow me to look at one on TV. I can see the point of watersheds, and cable/sat which allow censorship options to prevent children from seeing these things, and I'm all for that. but the notion that grown adults who have a penis (or access to one) not being allowed ot watch them on TV is ridiculous.

what's going to be next in the US? all full lenght mirror to have frosted glass across the centre so you don't accidentally look at a dick when you're getting dressed?

especially as with the whole 'anything but a mickey' thing, which is very true of todays warped society.

There was a classic example of this madness on the Tom Green Show.
Because he knew it would have to blurred out, it decided to write FUCK on a big piece of card. First it wrote F - no problem. Then he writes FU - and they blur the bloody "U" out. He hadn't even written the full word yet. He continues to FUC ("UC" blurred) and when he completes the word ("UC" still blurred), he runs around the studio with the card to make it as hard as possible for the guy who does the blurring in post-production...

    ah yes, brilliant stuff that..

as vibe666 said, I understand watersheds and sattelite child-locks, because while one person may have no problem with their children seeing a sex scene/erect penis/whatever, some may have. But for it to be banned completely is stupid, its almost like Ireland C. 1930s when sex didnt exist.
And if anyone complained about a sex scene on TV at 11 or 12, because their child saw it, they should be told that its THEIR responsibility to stop their children viewing such material, and if its post-watershed and (as most things do) has a warning then they should expect adult material. lazy parents would just try to pass the buck when it comes to lued material, thats one major reason why things are so rigid.

Exactly. Lazy parents pi$$ me off. The ones who sue McDonalds because the burgets made their kids fat - here's an idea: stop being a sh1t parent and feed your kid properly. Take responsibility.

I do not like the idea that some sort of higher-moral-authority dictates what's suitable for me. How dare they. The watershed is fine in concept, but when even it seems to have its limits....

Thankfully, Ireland isn't the worst but we could be a lot better. Hopefully things will change with time - slowly, over time, it has. Here's to the future...

I've been watching the reruns of Friends on E4 at 8pm, and I notice that all scenes of someone being locked up or trapped are cut out (very badly I might add)

For example, when Monica is locked in the storage room by the other cooks, when Rachel's boss handcuffs Chandler to her office chair, when Rachel handcuffs him to the filing cabinet, when Joey is locked in his furniture thingy, when Chandler is put in the box.... all of these are cut out.

Are these censored because someone at E4 thought it might be a good idea, or because of a specific complaint?

    World has gone stupuid.

I heard on the radio at work today that the networks are considering banning all uses if the " 'F' word" on television broadcasts. Im sorry but if that was even true its bloody stupid. Yes you can buy a gun in Wal Mart but you cannot say f**k. America is pants.

I also hate the uber PC thing going on. Its very annoying.

what i thought was a good step forward was the relaxation on the rudeness of the word sh1t.
I heard it on the radio afew times well before 9, and it just seems to be one of the least rude-rude words.

But as things relax on one word they get stricter on everything else.

apparently there's some sort of anti french connection movement trying to stop them selling clothes and bad aftershave.

It's not actually the networks who are doing it. It's the US Senate. They're bringing in a law that will ban the use of certain words on mainstream television. So much for free speech, huh?

"The attitudes of the six close-knit young friends in the play cannot be generally accepted by Chinese audiences yet,"

how nice of them to decide that but sometimes i would have liked it for the authorities to decree the same here

Pierce Brosnan spoke out on the issue after the making of The World is not Enough. He spoke of the scene where he is in bed with Sophie Marceau and her nipple kept creeping into shot so they had to shoot the scence about 20 times so the nipple stayed out of shot but then later in the film when he shoots her you can clearly see the wound in her head. So, you can show a woman getting her brains blown out but you can't show her nipple. PC gone completley insane!!!

That thing about the US senate and not the Networks trying to ban words makes sense.
If Ive learned nothing else from the simpsons, its that channels like Fox are constantly trying to slip their standards into XXX territory to appeal to the young male audience.
Sadly this type of motivation for nudity on TV isnt how it should be, but if laws were losened we'd have to expect it (e.g. Five in the UK, and perhaps even TV3 if things are looking dodgy for them in the future). I refer to my earlier point of the parents duty of parenting as a method of dealing with such events.

How are they trying to do that? They can't even show a nipple! All they can do is be provacative and suggestive...

thats my point, they are TRYING to get more XXX, but they cant, given half the chance they would, so you couldnt argue the networks arent interested/ are too afraid to go that way

Fed up with recent repeated instances of broadcast TV networks allowing language that many people would deem offensive to be aired live, the Republican House member has introduced a bill that spells out the seven awful words that would be banned from the public airwaves in all their forms and all their meanings -- "including verb, adjective, gerund, participle and infinitive forms,'' as the bill says.

Among the words are such swear-word standbys as those used for excrement, fornication, urine and parts of the body. The list includes one word, a -- h -- , twice, as one word, and in its compound form to leave no doubt Ose wants it banned.
    Right, so that's

    1) shit
    2) fuck
    3) piss
    4) cunt
    5) asshole
    6) cock sucker
    7) motherfucker

<sigh> I worry about those stoopid arsehole Americans, needing a fuckin law to protect them from the dickheads who use naughty words (tut tut). Someone's gotta be takin' the piss with this shit.

It's the "Oh for the love of gawd won't someone pleeeeease think of the children" types that I'm referring to.
Look after yer own damn children and what they get up to instead of waiting for someone else to wrap 'em in cotton wool!

    It is what it's.
