I'm a very sceptical person by nature, a 'Scully' if you will. Anyway, somehow the topic came up with my parents, and I was very surprised to find out that they both believe in ghosts! In fact they both claimed to have experienced weird events.

So tonight I kind of made fun of my parents, but just a few minutes ago I experienced something very freaky. Something that sounded kind of human hissed at me!!! We have some cats, but they are all outside, my pc speakers are off! What the f**k like!

I haven't been drinking or taking any drugs just in case you were wondering ;)

Do you believe in ghosts, or the paranormal? 103 votes

No don't be silly. Some people have over active imaginations!

you have been having a conversation, your mind is still thinking about it and then you hear something you'd normally dismiss.

Sounds fairly open and shut :D

Great argument. Love the scientific bit in the middle :D

I actually voted wrong since I do believe in the paranormal and have had a personal experience that has bolstered that belief a small bit.

About a month and a half ago I was lying in bed just settling down to go to sleep, and was starting to get to the drowsy point, when I felt a very sudden feather like stroke across the skin of my upper arm. At the same time I heard a voice saying to me "this isn't a dream". When I looked up at the corner of the room furthest from me there seemed to be a small dark mishapen thing up in it (my room is constantly lit up by a couple of small lights from computer equipment, and my laptops moniter before you say anthing). Couldn't move for a minute or two, and found myself unable to get out of the bed for an hour or so. Stayed up till about 8 that morning, the experience was at 3ish. All of a sudden, just felt safe as houses, turned around and went back to sleep.

Also, when I was 14 I was on camp with the scouts over in Chalfont St. James in England. About a week in, I was washing dishes after dinner and joking around, and I suddenly felt really strickened and saddened and had to go sit down. I had a premonition that my grandmother, who was somewhat sick at the time, was just after dying. About an hour or two later I got a call to confirm my worst fears. Was unable to go home at the time, and had to wait for the trip to end which was kind of a bummer as well. :(

I'd be a serious skeptic on this topic.I think some people are very open to suggestion - just look at the whole moving statues in Ballinspittle in the late 80s, although thats more akin to mass hysteria

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,007 ✭✭✭Moriarty

Undecided really. To make me a firm believer either I'd have to see something myself or hear it from somone I trust implicitly.

No, I don't believe in ghosts. Give me some proof, rather than anecdotes - it not being a mathematical proof, you can't really ask me to disproove it. We die and we rot. End of story.

Who says we die and then become ghosts? They may just be another lifeform for all we know. More than likely thats what they are tbh.

Thats either due to one of three things and you know it:
    1. far to much sleep, your mind has become hyperactive
    2. NOT enough sleep so you start imagining things
    3. You watched Aliens, I told you before DON'T watch it, you'll have nightmares
    But did you listen...noooooo :p

Or it could have been you, or Dealga, or _sheep. But it was more than likely dogs!

He sneeks into your room, starts to stroke you, tells you its not a dream, then all of a sudden, you get chloroformed and imagine the rest, except for the not being able to move part. That happened! Dogs is kinda kinky like that!

sounds like sleep paralysis, i've had it once or twice and it's very very freaky. It's believed to account for quite alot of "paranormal activity that occurs just before, during or after sleep.

Sure I believe that the paranormal exists. I've heard a few great local ghost stories so I choose to believe that there's fact in them somewhere.

    GHOSTBUSTERS!

I believe in ghosts, had two freaky incidents happen to me at home, one where I saw these two people hovering over me when I was lying in my bed, and the other when I felt some thing grab my throat the following night. I remember yelling "I can see you" and then they jus vanished.

Really ****t up! Of course I was scared ****less and so I slept with the door open ever since then.

Ive never had unexplainable or freaky incidents happen to me but my brother swears that on the night after my grand father he saw him in the room and talked to him, my brother though it was a dream, at the time my brother was in school doing his leaving at the time and was scared sh!tless that he was going to have to repete school as it was really looking like that he would.

But according to my bro my grandad told him that he's pass school and everything would be alright, he'd make it to college and he'd get a job, and he did to this day my bro doesnt really know what to make of it and neither do i.

In reference to the fellow that had an exp with the person at the corner of his room They are refered to as the shadows.Do some research on them they are really interesting.I do happen to believe in the paranormal I have the the w*** Board and some stuff has happened there that I or none of my friends can explain however I would not do it again as I had a bad expierience with it.

I do believe in them but I also believe that most exp's with ghosts are maybe another race another being.

IS any one here firmiliar with 'Rods' if so then thas some ****ed up **** i think you will agree just seeing them defies all physics that we have come to believe (If they are in fact real)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭tinkerbell

what is this rod that you talk about?

My experience was weird enough, but then somethin odd happened. I screamed my head off (obviously), and the following morning, both my parents hadn't heard me, yet my brother had heard the scream. I jus thought it kinda strange, coz if I so much as talk in my sleep, it wakes up my folks, never mind when I scream in my sleep! Oh and my brother could sleep through a nuclear holocaust.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,236 ✭✭✭AL][EN

Yea Grom Ive herd about the rods alright saw it on a aired on bravo unfortunatly science disproved the rod theroy about 2 or 3 months ago there was some techie explanation that they had that seemed to make sence something about the way a camera takes photographs it can capture light incorrectly im not sure im not a science geek but it seems that there fake

    Tinkerbell:

There's plenty of stuff on these apparent rods now for a while i did actually believe however science once again has smashed my dreams!!

This is one example of a website on rods.

    go googling for "UFO Rods"

PLEASE PLEASE dont do a web search for just the word rods as you (ahem) come up (no pun intended) with some rather dodgy websites.

I think it's rather naive not to believe in ghosts/the afterlife. After all, if this reality can exist (as in the universe we live in), what's to say that another one doesn't exist, different to our own?

Personally, I believe in ghosts, and think they're probably people or beings stuck here on the earth plane (or whatever you want to call it) for various reasons. How they interact with us or objects here is beyond me though.

There has to be more to life methinks, and consciousness must have a higher purpose. Does anyone else think the same way?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,423 ✭✭✭tinkerbell

Yop, my opinion is that we're ignorant to believe that there is only one form of life and that is the one that we can see and feel.

Plus, why is the universe so hooj if tiz jus to accomodate one life form and one tiny planet with life?

That's my two cents anyway :)

*goes to check that rods site*

Jus checked it ... so basically a rod is a UFO?

Thanks, very interesting web page, about 1/3 of the way through it at the moment. Fits my experience down to the ground. I still believe in the paranormal, but this sleep paralysis is just one more weird part of life I guess.

Ur mentor has a good point by the way, what the hell is up with the poll results?

I don't 100% believe in ghosts, but I don't disbelieve. I agree entirely with your statement. We have no idea why we're here or what's out there. I always give the example that dogs only see in grey, so to a dog colours don't exist and they have no reason to believe they do. However, we do know they exist (in our eyes anyway). I'd imagine we're similar to dogs and that there are things out there that we're just not capable of seeing.

I dlove for you to show me this scientific breifing of were they were disproved.Ive been followign rods quite alot and have not heard of this,

You need to put the camera at about 10000.to get a good capture per frame and as for catching light look at the one that was shot in a tornado virtually in the dark the thing was about 40 ft long and zommed straight away at a vigerous speed.

One notion i have if you say that its the light captured wrong to me this is complete bull**** we all know light travles in straight lines at about the speed of 380000 kmh 3x10^8 or so hence unless refraction occurs were as it bends the rods which gives them this zipping funtion then it can not be light and when you look at most rods they are in open spaces were refraction does not happen. (oh and they certainly dont travel at the speed of light) however they do defy all physics quantum and relativity wonder if they got quantum and relativity together if they could solve it screw gravity and weak and stron emf's :)

So show me this light capturing data. Not saying your wrong id just like to analyise it(sp)

    Ghosts...hmmm..

Most of you seem to be sceptics.

I'm not sure what I believe. I think I like to believe that there is a possibility that there is ghosts etc., but I've never actually seen a shred of evidence.

I've heard numerous stories, including ouija board anecdotes, houses, poltergeists etc. I'd like to believe them, but stories are open to 'artistic licence' and can never be taken literally.

I have an open mind, maybe, maybe not.

Just to cut a long story short. My father told us years ago that my older brother (about 11 at the time) saw a person in one of the bedrooms in my house. I thought nothing of it at the time and that was that. But now my niece (who is 2) is scaring my sister, who won't put her to sleep when it is dark anymore because the niece is always pointing over to the spot, where my brother was supposed to have seen the person, and saying man, man! She is still too young to put a sentence together so she can't describe what she is seeing.

My sister really believes her daughter can see someone and my brothers experience only backs it up more. I have seen my niece pointing at the spot once or twice when I have to go into her at about 3am and it is quite creepy.

I do believe it is the dead and not another form of life. People just don't want to believe in this stuff. There is as much a chance of there being Ghosts as there is of life on other planets.

That's quite a chilling tale. Poor little thing, sure she probably doesn't understand. You just reminded me of another tale that I heard.

One day I went over to a friends house. He was playing guitar in the box room at the front of the house. I sat down and talked to him a while. The rest of the house was warm, but his room was quiet chilly. The radiator was on full blast, as it was in every other room in the house, and you would imagine that a smaller room would be warmer, but it wasn't. I asked him about this, and he then went into a story.

He told me about a couple who had lived in the house before his family had a young child, one year old, that died in a cot in that room. At the back of the room, on the wall there is a love heart, with the child's name written inside the heart. The love heart is written in red marker. The paper on the wall, covering the heart has peeled off. His family tried to put paper over the wall several times, but it keeps peeling off at that point.

Now, sceptics will pick holes in this, and well may they, as I am not saying that there were actually ghosts there, but it is creepy none the less.

Ghosts are basically people from the future trying to time travel, but because their time travelling equipment isn't sophisticated enough they aren’t fully able to transport themselves. Its quite logical really.

No, and you'd be an idiot to believe.

If you believe in ghosts, then you'd have to believe in all sorts of other crazy crap.

I remember thinking I saw a ghost when I was six, and I was like "oh no" Then I realised it was a funny shaped bundle of clothes, and also realised, you have to be stupid to believe in ghosts.

Argument, there is no argument here, it's as clear as crystal. You are an idiot if you believe in ghosts, simple, it's the same as believing in Santa Claus. Do I have to explain why you shouldn't believe in Santa Claus, no.
Would you be considered an idiot if you, as an adult, believed in him. YES!

I don't need facts as there is no facts to prove or disprove, because there is no need.

You believe you saw or experienced something due to the suggestion of ghosts, not because you have become super aware or something.

I actually wonder will alot of people claim to have had a ghostly experience tonight after reading this thread.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,107 ✭✭✭TheSonOfBattles

My only real paranormal experience was disproved earlier on in the thread by someone else, who provided a link with quite a rational explanation which I now believe to be the cause because it makes a lot more sense than ghosts. After all what reason would one have to be hanging around in my room tbh.

That doesn't mean that i'm suddenly become so arrogant as to believe that this huge universe contains just one species in just one plane of existance. I'm not saying that ghosts, other lifeforms, aliens etc exist for definate. I'm not however niave enough to say that they don't exist at all, and that its pure rubbish, and anyone who believes in them is an idiot.

A lot of stuff people relate to paranormal or extra terrestrial activity is of course bull****, and a lot of people make money by playing off of other peoples belief, but that doesn't mean there isn't an inkling of truth in it either.

You say there are no facts to disprove or approve of ghosts. Fine, but facts are scientific in nature, and paranormal activity is by its very nature not scientific. If there was scientific evidence it'd be a huge paradox and a hoax for definate.

Bottom line: Don't be so arrogant as to believe only what you see, and you know is the truth. Try to keep an open mind eh.

Oh, and this is a family friendly site, Santa does exist, and don't try to prove otherwise. :p

    Yes Ghosts do exist.
No, not everyone dies to become a ghost.
Yes I believe and yes I have have SEVERAL experiences, infact I have had some sort of connection with the other side since I was a small child.
I think to be open enough to believe is to be open enough to recieve the messages that are being sent. Only someone with an open mind and open heart can be totally aware of thier surroundings and everything happening both naturally and supernaturally around them.

I think those who turn thier nose up at even the notion are just afraid to accept it or just to stubborn to accept that everything can not be explained. It would throw thier little world out of control to know that such a thing can happen without some bonified explanation.
What ever floats your boat I guess ;)
