Next G5 or new iMac?

    I am thinking of switching soon. I was thinking of getting an iMac but was waiting till after MWSF for possible news but that was quite disappointing hardware wise.
    I think the general concensus now seems to be to wait till after the Superbowl. I would be very interested to hear of any thoughts on the following;
    What are the odds of the iMac being updated or replaced? If so,when?
    If updated, what are the chances of it getting G5?
    What are the chances of the powermac G5 coming down in price?
    I'm reading a lot of complaints about the 17" studio display... any thoughts?
    What of the rumours regarding apple displays getting updated?

    Basically my budget will probably mean me getting the iMac but I would hate to get it and then find it being replaced or overhauled soon after.
    There is also the lack of options for expansion.

    Thanking you for any suggestions...

    Unfortunately technology moves on regardless! Only 3 months after I bought my G3/900 iBook they announced a G4 iBook, needless to say I was quite miffed !

    I think the best advice is buy the best you can afford now, The iMac is a lovely device but not very expandable.

    For serious work I'd suggest the lower end G5 tower rather that the iMac. You could then buy the lowest spec regarding RAM/HDD/CD etc and buy the upgrades cheaper elsewhere.

    The second hand market is good at the moment. If you were to buy a Quick Silver G4 tower you can buy a dual 1.25GHz CPU board from Power Logix or Sonnet and you would save a few bob. As for displays any decent TFT with a DVI input will work while maintaining quality display.
