Gaps....

I've had a gap between my front teeth since I was about 10 (or whatever age I lost my baby teeth at). It's not a huge gap or anything, & all my teeth are perfectly straight. It's just that the two front teeth sit a few millimetres apart.

But people tend to comment on this gap I have...mostly men, & it makes me incredibly paranoid! Like I said....the space isn't big at all. I know people who can fit a coin between their two front teeth. I can't do that. Anyways...what I was wondering was....has anyone ever had this same problem & is there a way to go about getting it fixed?

What age are you? The best time to get stuff like that fixed is just after your permanent teeth have come in.

Best place to go to get it fixed would be an orthodontist. Discuss it with your regular dentist and get referred to a decent one. Before you do decide to get any corrective type stuff done to your teeth establish exactly what will be going on and how long he estimates it will take. Spent far too long in train tracks as a young lad and again in late teens to advise anyone that corrective dental work is any fun but if it bothers you enough it will be worth doing as it can boost self-confidence.

If you're happy enough the way you are don't bother - nothing wrong with a little gap no matter what people say to you. From what I've heard, gaps like that affect the sound/tone of your voice a small amount so you may have to take that in to consideration though that may be an old wive's tale.

next time a bloke mentions it, say:

"thanks for your opinion Mr. Brad Pitt, I take it under consideration"

    nobodies perfect

however, if it's bothering you that much see a dentist.

I think it can be quite sexy actually! :D Is that weird? Probably the influence of Vanessa Paradisè in earlier life! I challenge anybody to say her gap influenced her appeal in any negative way! Doesn't Liam Gallagher's ex-wife (can't remember her name now, grrr...) have an attractive gap too? Didn't do her image any harm.

    [Edit]Patsy Kensit! That's the one![/Edit]

Isn't there an old wives tale about people with a gap between their two front teeth, they're meant to be famous?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 200 ✭✭DArcy

One old wives tale says that people with "a gap" are great singers.....

As for the male comments, the so-called Brad Pitts of the world say "hey...see ya got a gap there. Is there no way you can get that fixed?". Charming!
I think it can be quite sexy actually!

    There's just not enough mr_angrys around ;)

    Thanks for the suggestions guys.

I had the exact same thing from when I first grew my proper teeth until I was about 20. i was so paranoid about it - other than one tooth which was slightly out and to the side, I had perfect teeth. It meant I was paranoid about smiling, which may sound stupid but to a shy young fella it was a nightmare.

Anyway, I got a proper job back in 95 and paid for my own dental work - two different braces. No train tracks, as I didn't want that much work, and after about 12 months of struggling with the lisp and discomfort of wearing a retainer I started seeing results. So much so that I only wore it at night. The gap in my teeth is barely noticeable now, and I have to admit that getting the brace was one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Hope that doesn't make you feel any more paranoid

    Si.

If that was the case.. would everyone who is famous not have a gap in their teeth then?

I think gaps in front teeth looks class... I used to where tracks when I was younger and at one point I had a gap in my front teeth ... I asked him to leave it .. but he couldn't .. something to do with my bite not being straight .. n e way ... I wouldn't touch it if I where you

I know Madaonna is an obvious one to mention .. but I think her teeth look class

Two girls I've known in the past each had a gap between their two front teeth. Both very sexy too regardless. I looked on it as a feature, not a bug ;).

Look at it this way... Laurence Fishburne has a big gap in his teeth... get yourself a big black trench coat, shave your head and you can be Morpheus!

You can get veneers done if you want to, they'll fill any gaps, usually not too expensive, but be prepared for a couple of weeks getting used to them

wont it just look like you've one big front tooth then? :)

It's called a laminate. The dentist will file down the surface of each, then glue on to falsies. I've got one on my front tooth. Waaaaay cheaper than crowns/caps and whatnot.

No. It would just mean that the people with a gap in their teeth would be part the larger whole of people who are famous. But then everybody is famous for 15 minutes.

Yeah, was tryin' to be upbeat about it...kind of.....or ironic....
Ah, what the hey, if the only thing people can comment on is a gap between yer teeth, then I think that this chappie is hanging around with the wrong people.

I've got a decent sized gap between my two front teeth good 2-3mm, and nobody has ever commented on it, and Im ancient!!!

Brace didnt work for me, Orthodontist said I would have to have an operation to cut a chunk out of the gum above it before the brace would work. At that point I made my excuses and left and never looked back.

And on the plus side its easier to whistle! ;)

It's supposed to be a sign of a high sex drive, and if you happen to be who I suspect you are, that's very true!

It's supposed to be a sign that you've got ****ty teeth. Still, who gives a ****?

I wouldn't worry - having a small gap is much better than having an over crowded mouth with teeth crowding each other out.
